Edit above was just to put the title in the usual format.

Balu has a career high of 674 set in 2011. Zende is playing her first ITF (senior or junior)

There are 27 Indians, 2 Brits & 3 others in the draw - 2 of the "others" have been drawn together in the match that will decide Emily's R2 opponent should she get through R1.

Ems round 2 will be a very good junior who has struggled with the initial transition to the pros. Hsu the more dangerous I think.

Shame for Eden but she can't have hoped for for a much better draw for a 15k and at least it was a very close score and a real match.

Hsu won her match 7-6 6-2 so that's next for Emily:

L16: Emily Webley Smith (2) WR 428 v Ching-Wen Hsu (TPE) WR 867

With the bizarre logic of the women's tennis scoring system, this second round match gets you 7 additional points (whereas winning the next one only gets you 3). So go for it, Em.

Emily dropped just 9 points in her win! The results up above still show old rankings (not that any of them have changed much, admittedly) - with new ones:

L32: Eden Silva WR 1170 lost to Sharmada Balu (IND) WR 826 (CH 674 in 2011) by 6-1 2-6 6-4
L32: (2) Emily Webley Smith WR 423 beat (Q) Supriya Zende (IND) UNR by 0 & 0

L16: (2) Emily Webley Smith WR 423 v Hsu Ching-Wen (TPE) WR 867 (CH 814 in Aug; junior WR 18 / CH 6)

Hsu is a potential banana skin, so Emily will need to play well.

Hsu is probably a better player than the majority of the seeds, but still disappointing given the points structure for these events (which is thankfully being corrected for 2014)

Horrible result for Em let's hope she does better in the two weeks in Egypt minimum 10 points should be the target.

What is the ranking point structure for the $15ks?

(Hi everyone - first post. I'm a lost stray from the GB Tennis Girls messageboard).

Hi, you poor little waif and stray. For Mumbai, i.e this year, it's 1, 8, 11, 15, 20

See:

www.wtatennis.com/all-about-rankings

Doubles : Em and Bhargava win their QF dubs match 6-0 6-3

Welcome, Jon.

Yes, logic and numerical series are not the WTA's strong points, though I hear they are changing quite a lot next year.

In this instance, all the more annoying for Emily of course.

Eden Silva, who very cannily teamed up with Ching-Wen Hsu, has just won her doubles QF : 6-7(1) 6-3 10-5, beating the number 2 seeds.
