RE: Week 46 - Challenger ($50,000) - Champaign, IL, USA (hard)

BS, opposite way round to Steven, I saw most of the first set up till the last two games. But it was the same - Quigley played poorly (really poorly at times) and Ed was striking the ball cleanly, nice depth on his forehand, solid serving - nothing too amazing but all very much getting the job done.

I saw "BS, opposite way round to Steven" and thought you were an American telling me you thought I was talking rubbish wink I'm glad our impressions from opposite ends of the match agree! smile

Ed could be within a win of the top 300 now, though with one win it would be touch and go - he needs 2 more to make certain.

I am assumng that there is some "LTA bonus" cash for that win as well. I have been looking for the "Matrix" but couldn't find it.

I think that's GBP 500 for Ed. (as well as the same for Josh and Dan S and 300 for George - expensive tournament for the LTA - and good !!! Let's hope it carries on).

Here's hoping Dave & Sean can repeat their Charlottesville heroics in Champaign:

R1:  (4) James Cluskey & Maximilian Neuchrist (IRL/AUT) CR 311 (154+157) vs David Rice & Sean Thornley CR 416 (210+206)

And that's exactly what they do:

R1:  David Rice & Sean Thornley CR 416 (210+206) defeated (4) James Cluskey & Maximilian Neuchrist (IRL/AUT) CR 311 (154+157) by 4 & 4

That was worth waiting up for! biggrin

Yup, much more comfortable this time as well. smile Looked in control on serve and the only break point they faced was also match point. Good stuff

Well, Ed was supposed to win this, but it's good to see him winning in any case. It's impossible to predict with any sort of certainty on a Tuesday, but another win here may just take him to the top 300.

Dave sees it through 6-3 6-4 and like Ed before him posted some good looking stats smile

5 Aces, No DFs, 81% first serves in, winning 77% of points behind it and 60% behind the second serve, no break points faced.

Had a break point for the double break saved by a big 1st serve

...and there goes Polansky's racket!

Watched all the match so far, fantastic from Dan. He can really dominate with his forehand in rallies alongside some consistent backhand chopping.

I think his inconsistent serving has maybe held him back in his career so far but fingers crossed he can keep this up!

Fantastic win for Dan (a career best scalp, taking over from the win against Reynolds in R1 here last year) to finish off an amazing R1 for the Brits!

L32: Dave Rice WR 329 beat Takanyi Garanganga (ZIM) WR 362 (CH 342 in Jul) by 3 & 4
L32: (Q) Josh Milton WR 580 beat Fritz Wolmarans (RSA) WR 629 (CH 198 in 2011) by 4 & 5
L32: Ed Corrie WR 319 beat Eric Quigley (USA) WR 597 (CH 479 in Aug) by 3 & 3
L32: (Q) Dan Smethurst WR 485 beat (5) Peter Polansky (CAN) WR 141 (= CH) by 7-6(6) 7-6(8)

L16: Dave Rice WR 329 v Erik Crepaldi ITA WR 515 (= CH)
L16: (Q) Josh Milton WR 580 v (3) Rajeev Ram (USA) WR 125 (CH 78 in 2009) or (WC) Marcos Giron (USA) WR 553 (CH 550 in Oct)
L16: Ed Corrie WR 319 v (WC) Dennis Nevolo (USA) WR 579 (CH 566 in Oct)
L16: (Q) Dan Smethurst WR 485 v Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND) WR 509 (CH 506 last month)

Crepaldi reached the semis at Edgbaston Futures last month & upset top seed Smyczek in R1.

Nevolo upset 6th seed de Voest in R1 and beat Ed 6-3 6-7(3) 6-0 in Mansfield, Texas last month.

Still, we can't ask for much more than 4 Brits in R2 with at least 3 playing opponents ranked outside the top 500 for a place in the quarter-finals!
