But is that really fair? Mr Thornley hasn't given up singles per se - he's just a better doubles player than singles player. So he's not likely to get top-ups in the singles. Cut the doubles top-ups and you simply run the risk of freezing out one half of a very strong and stable partnership. I can see (sort of. maybe) not funding any doubles players outside the bonus system. But not knocking out the bonuses.

Maybe I got it wrong - I don't follow the doubles that much, just smile when they win ! I thought that the bonus top-up had been cut/limited, as well as no direct funding but maybe that's not true.
No, I wasn't suggesting you got it wrong - I don't have reliable info one way or the other. But if you got it right, I think it's one of those policies that may (a) make life more difficult for people who are primarily doubles players and (b) actually wind up adversely affecting some of the singles players whom the LTA would most like to see progress, as they rely on the doubles matches and top-ups to supplement their income.
Will be interesting to see what Jonny does next year because he really needs a top 30 player to keep playing the masters events. To be honest i would not be surprised if he plays with Freddie in Australia but I think he would be better finding a regular partner than playing with someone that would rather play a 10K futures than on the ATP tour
The Sheffield Star is reporting that Jonny will play with Paul Hanley (AUS) DWR 66 (CH 5 in 2006), who reached the Final in Brisbane in January but hasn't done much since. They have only played together once before but that went pretty well - they reached the semis at the Paris Masters, beating the Bryans on the way.
