RE: Week 44 - Great Britain F23 ($10,000) - Edgbaston (hard)

Marzi to serve for the set at *5-4

Fitzy loses the first set 6-4 as Crepaldi wins 5 games in a row

Marzi eventually battles through that service game to take the set 6-4

Fitzy is going to have to do it the hard way after going a break down in the second set at 1-2*

Has he got anything left in the tank after two long three setters in the first two rounds ?

Back to the wall time for Fitzy at 2-5*

Marzi is a double break up at 5-1* in the 2nd set and looking good.

So Fitzy's adventure comes to an end as he goes down 4&2 to 7th seed Crepaldi

It's been fun.

Marzi breaks again to complete a comprehensive win over the 4th seed by 4&1

Showing some really good form again. Great to see.

Wow, good win that for Marzi against a guy who was ranked #169 in the world just over a year ago.

So at least we'll have one Brit in the semi-finals (two if Tom can also pull off an upset).

Today's result should see james back to about WR 600, just a tad over.

It was an defintely an upset the pole was in a state of shock and told me he was not expecting to have to get the early flight back . He was a very good player and It's great to see Marzi having such a great end to the season .

I know this is the wrong place to announce it but apprently County cup being abandoned by the LTA at Devonshire park

If you set Marcus a points total, he will reach it easier by playing futures, especially if you pick them carefully.  He could get a Wimbledon Wild Card on the ranking, and get whalloped.

If Marcus was to play harder fought events, he may not get the points as easy, but will no doubt become a better player.

What is the overall goal for Marcus?  If it is to play on the main tour then, developing him as a player should be most important, even if his ranking lags a little due to the learning.  To be a main tour player for example, I am sure his game would benefit from a spell on clay..........but that may not yeild as many points as tournaments on other surfaces.

6 and 12 month ranking totals are important, but should only be a part of his approach I would have thought?  Goalsetting is easy Gary as I know you know........Dream forwards then plan backwards.  If he's going to crack the top 100 within 3 years (possible????) then I would use the rest and training periods wisely, choose the tournaments that develop his game.......a mix of indoor and out..........fast and slow.......futures, challengers even ATP qualies.  If all of this is done then I wouldn't give a stuff where his ranking is in May as long as you both felt that he was improving at the pace to hit that longer term goal.

But thats just my opinion, and I'm not paying the bills................but you did ask!

This is precisely what I'd want Marcus to do, too. smile

It's actually possible to be top 200 by only playing Futures, e.g. this gentleman will probably do it very soon. And as you can see, his YTD Prize Money is not too shabby, either, so he certainly knows what he is doing.

But when you look at how he does against players in the top 250, you realise that he's probably not stepping up from Futures anytime soon. Being ranked higher doesn't necessarily make you a better player...
