Does it still count as tactical if it comes before your own serve?
I'd say so. I'd say what is tactical is that you were in the driving seat, had 5 (?) MP, the other guy blowing himself up, and suddenly you lose two tight games, and now have to serve for the set and you want to break the guy's momentum, give yourself a chance to re-group etc. etc.
I',m not saying Josh is doing this - but it could well look like it.
So, a recovery from a set down to get a 14th Challenger qualifying win in a row for Dave and a recovery from a set and a break down for Josh to save GB blushes by ensuring that an American ranked outside the top 1600 didn't escape from a section with four much higher-ranked Brits in it!
FQR: Josh Milton WR 606 beat (WC) Ryan Shane (USA) WR 1677 by 4-6 6-4 6-4
FQR: (q3) David Rice WR 374 beat Alexios Halebian (USA) WR 824 by 6-7(2) 6-2 6-3
(N.B. rankings not updated since it was still qualies)
Despite their FQR opponents' (probably misleading) rankings, I'd say it's a fine achievement from both of them to qualify here

Well done to both the lads and I must admit that I was wrong about Milton's prospects! 3 matches is hard work, but they get 5 points for the effort, which is quite fair, I'd say.
L32: (Q) Josh Milton WR 605 v (4) Donald Young (USA) WR 104 (CH 38 in 2012)

Yup it was close I was dipping in and out but I saw the end of the second set and they went a mini break up in the tiebreak only to lose it. Tuned back in to see them play well to break and take the second set. Then they twice went up a mini break in the match tiebreak. They probably should have won it but not to be today. A shame for them.
I love their draws. They don't get to play against the fringe Tour players too often, so this should teach them what the top players do. With 5 points and some guaranteed cash*, this is a win-win situation for them - lose, and no one cares, but win, and you're a hero.
* let's not forget about the LTA bonus payments. Now I'm hardly a pom-pom wielding LTA supporter, but they have done a fantastic job with the bonus payments.
But as Indiana says, Dave and Sean have been MILES off making it to the semis or finals in the Challengers so they don't have that problem of Dave not being able to do the singles qualies.
I also think, like Indy, that at the moment things are fine for Dave but a little more dodgy for Sean. By doing a few qualie rounds and one or maybe two matches in the MD, Dave's singles pay OK (LTA bonus helps) and he's finished by Tuesday or Wednesday. So he's got a couple of rounds of doubles to play on Tuesday to Thursday, say, and he;s ready for the next qualies. And, as such, he's made enough to get by this year. (IF they were to win more doubles, it'd maybe be a problem).
Don't know how Sean manages to fund things though . . . .
edit: of course, it'd be nice if they went and had a great run in the dubs now though . . .

He is currently 0 for 7 on second serve. I think that says it all......he looks a pretty good player off the ground, but IMO his serve often isn't even up to the level of a good club player. Unless he sorts this out, I don't know where he goes from here........
