Woke up in time to follow last few games. There seemed to be no nerves in serving out the match. Guccione firing aces to the last. James seemed to have no chance to make it 5 all .
It looks like a very good serving performance by the Gooch (16 aces, 63% 1st serves in, 83% won on 1st, 54% on 2nd) but still very disappointing, especiailly with the quarter opening up even more after Brydan's next opponent upset the 9th seed who had himself, obviously, replaced a top 8 seed in that position. In fact, Wardy had similarlly good serving stats except that he wasn't as lethal as the Aussie when he got his 1st serve in,
L32: (3) James Ward WR 166 lost to Chris Guccione (AUS) WR 502 (CH 67 in 2008) by 7-6(6) 6-4 L32: Brydan Klein WR 402 beat (WC) Gavin van Peperzeel (AUS) WR 582 (= CH) by 7-6(5) 6-4
L16: Brydan Klein WR 402 v Jordan Thompson (AUS) WR 324 (= CH; top 20 junior a year ago)

Well, I suppose he pulverised all the poor Aussie hopes last week so it was time for them to get their own back.
But isn;t that James all over ? - one week where you think, great, getting it together, good results, and then suddenly it's back to square one with a pretty nasty loss . . .
James clearly needs help with the mental side of his game, having watched him play I believe he is able to compete in the top 50. Its not too late for him to get guidance with this, surely an investment that the LTA could provide which would could potentially reap big dividends in the long run. I expect some people will say that James is like other players and all the top 20 Brits would benefit from this kind of help but he is a hugely talented player with limited time to make a breakthrough and could prove to be a test case for this kind of help.
I completely agree with you Robin and I posted something similar a while back but people said, maybe rightly, well he must have thought of that/must have tried that already - which may be true because with his earnings he doesn't really need the LTA to chip in. He maybe couldn't pay for a full-time permanent psych coach but most don;t work like that anyway, it's 'training blocks'.
If it is true then, like you, LTA or not, I still think he should try again ! Some of the tennis psychs I've seen in France are amazing - it's a science that's evolved massively - but you have to find someone who you get on with, where you can buy off on the concept. And maybe James hasn't looked recently. His game really deserves it . . .
I suppose Calvin primarily lives in 'stralia even now? Either way, it must be very convenient to have bases in two completely different geographical regions, and he has a fairly unique advantage when it comes to scheduling. For example, he is rejoining the "Pacific tour" after a rest week, but Wardy has to drag on for five continuous weeks (not a bad thing, in hindsight ) because he can't possibly return to Europe for 3 days!
Obviously it's not necessary or feasible for the LTA to set up something like this, but a few home Challengers would be just as useful.
