As usual this is a week Grade A with just 9 top 100 players and a cut outside 1000. The preponderance of home names guaranteed that both Brits were drawn against Japanese players. Alex Sendegeya won the doubles last year with Borna Coric, so needs a good week to avoid a significant drop in the rankings.
R1 (L64)
Haru Inoue (JPN) v Lewis Roskilly (GBR)
(WC) Yasuaki Kayano (JPN) v (11) Alexander Sendegeya (GBR)
Alex has just had a remarkable win in the doubles quarter-finals (with Aussie Marc Polmans) to keep alive his chance of a second title here. They lost the first set 6-2, won the second 6-4 and came from 3-9 down, winning the next 8 points in the match tiebreak. Semifinal opponents to be determined (on court at present)
There are currently 4 '98s in the top 50, which is very impressive for that age - three are American, including Michael Mmoh (one of the others is Stefan Kozlov, who should be familiar to most regular readers of this section. Francis Tiafoe is the second - Mmoh and Tiafoe steered the US to the World Junior title last year)
