The boys are in with a shout of at least the semis: Nieminen & Tursunov, a pair of singles specialists, did for the third seeds earlier by 6-2 3-6 [10-6], ergo
QF: Jamie Murray & John Peers (AUS) CR 61 (32+29) vs Jarkko Nieminen & Dmitry Tursunov (FIN/RUS) CR 261 (116+145)
Hmmm. I'm not wholly certain that I'd call Nieminen and Tursunov a pair of singles specialists per se - Tursunov has always struck me as having parallels with people like Bjorkman and Mirnyi, insofar as being quite handy in both disciplines goes (though he's probably not as good in either as the aforementioned Swedish/Belarussian pair). In fact, he has more doubles titles/finals than singles. Nieminen's not bad in terms of doubles either, though less spectacular. And they won the Munich title together earlier this year.
You make a fair point, Spectator. Much as it goes against the grain, I was trying to look on the bright side...
At this point, I rejoice to say, they've done so well against so many pairings I had thought were going to be difficult that I'm prepared to face most prospects with equanimity! Only equanimity, though. Like you, I'm not a natural-born optimist.
Because all the singles players in the top half of the doubles draw went out early, but many members of the bottom half doubles pairings are still in the singles (at least I presume that's the reason), only top half of the doubles draw plays today. Reasonable, but does leave bottom half to play Friday QFs, Saturday SFs, and Sunday final. If any more of the aforementioned players make it through to the QFs, SFs, etc of the singles (which would be not unreasonable for either Nieminen or Isner), it's going to make for a long weekend.
Jamie and John due to play Nieminen and Tursonov n/b 4pm local.
However, Nieminen is first up for singles at 1pm local (just come off court after a long 3 setter) and Tursonov is now about to start his singles.
The other doubles semi, which doesn't involve ANY of the remaining singles players is second on the night session at around 10pm local.
Why on earth didn't they just put the doubles matches the other way around. It can only be because the other semi has a 25% Spanish involvement (Lopez) and they have done it for the crowds.
