RE: Week 43 - Israel F15 ($10,000) - Herzlia (Hard)

Just stepped in the door and saw that Scott had won 7-5 in the third !

That's a HUGE scalp for him - his best ever ?

L32: (Q) Scott Clayton WR 1459 def. (8) Markos Kalovelonis (GRE) WR 724 (= CH, beat Jonny 1 & 2 in Ramat H.) 2-6 6-4 7-5

Meanwhile Toby is 6-1 1*-0 up.

Evan just started. On serve.

Looks like Scott and Toby will be playing each other in round 2 - that's a nice quarter-final for one of them !

(Toby 2-0 in the second)

Evan seems to be playing a LL - Alon Elia has pulled out (seemingly) and now it's

Evan v Daniel Skripnik (ISR) WR 1670

(that said, Evann has just been broken 2-3* to Daniel)

L32: Toby Martin WR 1038 def. Or Ram-Harel (ISR) WR 854 (CH 838 in Jun) - H2H 1-0, 6 & 0, Ashkelon 2012 6-1 6-2

Another nice victory this morning, like scott, taking out someone a lot higher ranked.

Evan though is 3-6 0-3 down - shame - great opportunity to get his first Israeli point . .. c'mon Evan . ..

Evan lost 6-3 6-0

Which is disappointing.

And Josh is 2*-5 down which is more so, if it carries on like that.

Supposedly, Scott wasn't feeling too well today (though not THAT bad, presumably, if he took out a seed 7-5 in the third) - maybe they've got food bugs going round or something . . . or, more simply, just didn't/aren't playing well ? (Evan and JWH, I mean, not Scott of course).

Yes. Very. I think, at least to some extent, Evan (and to a lesser extent, Luke) has benefitted within the LTA from being part of the Junior GB team which won the Davis Cup a couple of years back. Hence full funding under Team Aegon ahead of others who arguably had similar cases. Kyle very much carried that Junior DC team, although the other 2 boys contributed with a few wins along the way.

Would be good to see something more from Evan and Luke sometime soon.

CD, according to the results section, Toby defeated a 16-year-old lucky loser called Shahar Elbaz (WR 1803 - CH 1594 in June), so more like an expected victory! wink

Oh Lord. I saw Evan's LL but didn't see Toby's at all and it must have been staring me in the face.

As you say, not such a sweet victory hmm but I guess at least Toby took advantage of it which is more than Evan did !

Given that's (at least) two more drop-outs (and the news re Scott, and Liam and Jonny in the last couple of weeks) I'm wonder more and more if there is a food bug problem. ALthough that may be completely off mark . . .

And, the most underwhelming result of the day :

L32: (7) Josh Ward-Hibbert WR 695 lost to (Q) Lance Cohen (RSA) UNR 6-3 6-4

I've noticed at least one more:   the fourth seed, Botzer, defeated a lucky loser called Oran Reznik! disbelief

I would bet a reasonable sum of cashew nuts that it's a gastro bug or (less likely) food poisoning related to the hotel which the players are staying in. It could also explain the Evan and JWH performances (I empahsise could, because the most likely explanation is simply played badly/opponent played well), because they were a little odd.

AND Djere won his match but not against the guy on the drawsheet but Barkai, ANOTHER LL !

I agree with K, the most likely reason people lose is that they played badly/the other guy played well/ both.

But this is a LOT of withdrawals . .. maybe the tweets from Israel will help . . .

Oh dear. Toby and Scott need to be careful what they eat. Recent winners of all GB ties are not showing a good trend.

Week 1 Israel : Jonny O'Mara beats Liam - then retires ill.
Week 2 Israel : Liam beats JWH - then withdraws through illness
Week 3 Israel : Toby plays Scott - watch this space.

Given the number of LLs flying around as well, I think we have to at least consider the possibility of an tournament wide pandemic of some kind.

Yes. There were 7 singles matches today. Of these:

- 4 matches included LLs given MD spots!

- 2 results looked very surprising indeed. Scott's CH win against a seed, and JWH's straight sets loss to an unranked, never ranked South African.

- 1 result which looked in line with rankings.

If there isn't a tournament wide (or hotel wide) bug, I;d be surprised.

Nice to know that there's a good team feeling there (although this is from the one guy who obviously had a really good day):

Scott Clayton ‏@clayton_scott 5h

Happy with the win today. Good match mentally. Great GB spirit around as well. Great support from @Jonny_OMara @Bambo290 @Liambroady #thanks
