Must admit that I would be perfectly happy with a 1st alternate finish. They'd still get to go the event and gain the experience of being there. As I see it (and my lack of numerical proficiency is well-known on this board - so this may well be corrected by others), that could happen if:
(a) they go one round further than Mirnyi and Tecau, (b) they beat Gonzalez and Lipsky, (c) they or Fognini/Seppi beat Ingot and Huey (generally I would hope equally for the two teams, but in this instance, I'll be hoping more for Murray and Peers) (d) Benneteau/Zimonjic either win one fewer round than they or go out no later than the QFs and (e) Bopanna/ERV either win one fewer round than they or go out no later than the SFs.
A lot of "ifs" - but not impossible. Allons-y!

Today saw ERV/Bopanna and Gonzalez/Lipsky knocked out. That means that either the Poles or Mirnyi/Tecau get the final place ... but also, I think, that Messrs Murray and Peers are indeed second alternates. So a lot hinges on whether whichever party comes in 9th wants to go as alternates or not. My recollection is that last year Fleming and Hutchins were 10th, but the pair ahead of them turned the alternates spot down ...

That's correct, the Poles were the first Alts last year but decided not to go!!! I don't think anyone dropped out so Colin and Ross didn't actually get a match ...
Mirnyi and Tecau lose to Peya/Soares, so the Poles are in. Now ... will Mr Mirnyi and Mr Tecau want to go to London? Or not? The money is good, so it's clearly tempting. But why would one come to cold, wet London when one could spend time in warm, sunny Florida? Or the slightly warmer and drier (than London) Constanta?

I love your logic, Spectator. One can but live in hope...
This seems as good a place to mention it as any ... but apparently when the Bryans were asked to name an up-and-coming young doubles star (under 25), they struggled ... until deciding on Neal Skupski. And asked to name up-and-coming pairings, they mentioned Murray and Peers and Huey and Inglot. And this was in an interview with a US reporter, not a UK one. www.usatoday.com/story/sports/tennis/2013/11/09/bob-bryan-mike-bryan-atp-world-tour-finals/3484247/
We live in a golden age, we do. Congratulations to all of the above - and all best wishes for next year!
