That's too harsh to Laura!

Merged into the Osaka thread since it's to do with Laura's loss in Osaka

Steven, how do you do that?  A1 originally started his thread in the men's forum ( ) & I then moved it over here, but, not for the first time, I could see no way of moving it to a specific thread!

After clicking merge on the first thread, go to the thread you want to merge it into and when you click on the drop down box for mods it will say something like 'merge into' instead of just 'merge'. Click on that and the two will be merged together.

Sad thing is that most people who listen to talk sport won't know KDK is a very exceptional player. As much as it's irritated me Laura hasn't done as well as she might, I don't think it's a good comparison. I don't know who the new bloke is on talk sport, but I think he's going to annoy me even more than bouncy!

His name is Adrian Durham and he's not new. He fronts a phone in show and his method of encouraging calls is make controversial statements that stimulate a response. Often he doesn't believe what he's saying, but he has to take an opposing view to his sidekick Darren Gough. At least DG admits he knows little about tennis.

Thanks, wolf, but I fear I'm none the wiser:  I only ever see a "Move" option when I click on "Moderate", never "Merge", so I'm as as ever.  Maybe I'm missing something obvious (though clearly not to IT-illiterate me!) ...

If you click on the "- Moderate -" drop down from within the thread (not sure if there is anywhere else you can do it from, but I thought I'd specify that bit just in case), you should see:

mod.JPGDo you get something else?

Ah, thanks, Steven.  I think I get it now.  Probably wasn't persevering enough.  I'll try to remember in future, though Sod's Law being what it is, I'll probably never need to use it again! wink

I'm sure our old friend Gary can be relied on to give us a few more chances to put it into action ...

Interesting.

Yes, Laura's ranking stands up reasonably well in spite of her negative win / loss record because, given her Grand Slam and Premier Mandatory record, I would imagine her average win garners a lot more points than the other girls. But she has only made one QF all this year.

It's good to win big matches, but it would be great if next year she did that again plus, well, just won more matches.

Very interesting numbers. And I agree with Indy's comment too.

It's all very well being unplayable for a set, or even winning 1 or 2 big matches against big names - that gets you the headlines. But ultimately its about winning more matches. And stringing them together when your form is tip top to go deep in tournaments. That's what all of us are rooting for. Maybe next year. But before long Vekic, Barty, Konjuh and Bencic will be grabbing the headlines unless one of these (by then) ex-teens steps it up.

But I genuinely believe the potential upside for Laura is way higher than for the others.

The big stat for me is about how often these potential worldbeaters actually win tournaments on the way up through the levels from juniors to $10ks to bigger ITFs, International WTAs, then the Premiers and GSs (one day for the last 2). And that's the one area where Laura, Sloane Stephens and indeed another once touted superstar, Caroline Garcia, are big question marks for me. They are all super players: but how come they just can't seem to WIN tournaments throughout their careers to date. Odd really.
