Week 40 - Challenger ($100,000) - Sacramento, USA (Hard)

Thoroughly enjoying watching Kokkinakis play - still a real youngster but a pleasure.

And, with 7 players in the top 200 and 13 in the top 300, and a couple of young stars in the making, it seems that Australian men's tennis isn't looking too bad. Which is good.

NB Dan Cox is up afterwards (not before 9, I think)

I would make Wolmarans favourite for the match too (Josh has already done better than I expected getting this far, so good for him) but I also think it's about as good a draw as you could realistically hope to get for the FQR of a 100K Challenger.

I don't know why the South African is ranked quite so low these days but he has been playing regularly over the last 12 months, so it is a 'true' rankings. In fact, he has lost in final qualifying at his last 5 Challengers, ignoring Aptos where he gave Groth a walkover so never took to the court.

Nice to see Dan Evans standing court side supporting Dan C.

Very nice! Not the greatest level of play from either player, but when its good it's very good. A pleasure to see Dan scrapping away with Kudla and holding his own. 6-5*

Now 7-5!!!!!! Storming game from Mr Cox - 3 superb winners.

Fantastic returning game from Dan gives him the break and the set.  3 clean winners!

I'm not sure how you managed to post the above three minutes before me! I kow there are sometimes slight delays with streams but 3 mins!

Cox wins his service game to 15.

1-0 for Dan.

Well, he didn't smile much (you're not really allowed to celebrate when you win from a DF) but Dan, the man, come on down !!!!!

NB I don't mean he won thanks to the DF - he won because he played really well, and Kudla didn't.

A rare chance to watch Josh on stream - http://www.usta.com/Pro-Tennis/Pro-Circuit/pro_circuit_live/ (it took me a couple of refreshes to get it to work so bet365 may be a better option) - 1-3* though

The USTA stream is always rubbish for me so I use the link that says USTA on livescorehunter - http://www.drakulastream.eu/static/popups/174095392325550.html

It's pretty good quality except for the 20/30 second German ads that pop up every 10 minutes or so.

Thank you. Although that means I've been reminded once more of Josh's unique and extreme service motion - moving backwards rather than forwards at the strike point, plus a second serve which is literally in slow motion. A service motion almost designed to minimise rather than maximise power: I've never understood why this couldn't be coached out from a very young age - after all Josh most certainly was part of all the age group GB teams as a boy and as a junior

First set lost with 2 breaks and pressure on every service game.

The Jurgen Klinsmann one and the guy that just shouts at you are my favourites.

Is this the same commentator as last week? If it is is he in the middle of working 21 days in a row?

Josh lost the 1st set 6-1. 1-1 in the 2nd.

Dan and Nick looks as though they will be a very good pair, both big talents, would be great for a doubles run here.

A nice diversion for Dan and hopefully they do well. But I am sure his real focus, quite rightly, is building on his recent singles progress.

Josh will be first in line for a LL spot if one opens up.
