As I understand it, Division I schools are the great powers in the land athletically. With the exception of the Ivy League, I think, they are all permitted to give athletic scholarships (and generally do so). Division III schools are not permitted to give athletic scholarships en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Division_III_%28NCAA%29 and hence tend to attract students for whom athletics would not necessarily be their first priority.
Hence Mr Seeberger's competition would not necessarily have been at the highest level. That said, as several of the speakers on the thread you found state, the match record is fairly spectacular even so.
It's not often I know a player's ranking off by heart, but having followed and posted about the current number of players in the top 500 position, I knew Josh was just outside.
L32: Daniel Cox WR 268 v (1) Denis Kudla (USA) WR 99 L32: Daniel Evans WR 157 v (5) Rhyne Williams (USA) WR 128
I saw Rhyne Williams play FQR at Wimbledon. Tidy player but became frustrated in the 4th set which he lost and with it the match. Dan should fancy his chances. We'll all be happier when Dan is seeded in these events. I'm looking forward to watching, hope it is on a streamed court.
The heroics of the US Open are a few weeks past, and he's back playing in front of 2 men and a dog. Since the US Open he's had a convincing Davis Cup defeat by Dodig, and a disappointing R1 defeat by Klahn in a $50k.
Now I'm not one for Turning Points and Moments of Destiny in the general random noise which constitutes our time on Earth ... But if I was, I might think that the match with Williams could be one of them.

I don't think Evo's draws should really make that much difference. If his ambitions are to make top 100 he needs to go deep in challengers and so needs to beat the better players in the draw, whether or not he plays a seed in R1 or R2 really doesn't make that much difference. The annoying part of the draw was Cox getting Kudla, just as Corrie did last week.

I actually knew that as well but had made a typo the first time and kept copying and pasting. Posts now edited.
Thanks for explaining how Coxy got in, RJA. It seems a bit unfair to me, but I bet that Peliwo is not sulking any more after seeing whom Dan got.
In any case, I don't mind Coxy's draw too much. He doesn't have any immediate deadlines to meet, since he is going to be a part of the Australian Open, so I'm happy for him to play these fringe Tour players. He may struggle for a while, but eventually he'll learn to swim.
