RE: Week 40 - Challenger ($100,000) - Sacramento, USA (Hard)

R1:  Steve Johnson & Tim Smyczek (USA/USA) CR 373 defeated Marcelo Arevalo (ESA) & Dan Cox CR 1613 by 6-76(6) 7-6(4) [10-8]

Shame!  The boys acquitted themselves well against a very handy doubles pairing.

Sigh. Not to be. Probably should have won that really. Plenty of missed opportunities. Good effort though.

Evo;s match is 2nd on after 11.00am.  Unfortaunaltey it is on court 16, not the stadium court, so I don't think we'll be able to watch.  Tomorrow!

How do you know there will be a stream?  I am delighted though!  I shall buy some beers and popcorn!

Bet 365 are streaming both courts.

I'm not sure Dan Cox has enough weapons to go any further than top 200 at present, judging from what i've seen recently, but looks capable of being reasonably competitive at challenger level.

Cool and languid just received a point penalty for swearing for about the 10th time this set. Kyrgios about to serve for the match, so it's nearly Dan o'clock.

Edit: Kyrgios has now won. Dan on next.

Dan has two break points but can't get either return back in court. Wind is horrific.

Gets a third break point and Jenkins nets. Dan leads *4-2.

Some dodgy line calls going against Dan here. Jenkins looked to have hit it out about three times in that point and ended up winning it.

And goes on to win break straight back from 30-0 down. Loose game from Dan.

These conditions not dissimilar to the Murray/Berdych semi-final at the US Open last year..

Dan breaks straight back. Couple of brilliantly constructed points in that game, finished off with the trademark volley. *1-2, needs to consolidate.

Throws away yet another service game, this with time with a DF. Jenkins serving for second set.

Jenkins takes it 6-3. Dan playing pretty damn poor right now, with the odd sprinkling of genius thrown in.

Dan now down 2-1 in the decider, and I'll have to go now. Come on, Dan, pull your socks up! Atrocious conditions, but it's the same for both.

To context just how bad the conditions are , the forecast for Sacramento "Right Now" on weather.com says something along the lines of "risk of power outtages due to high winds"

....But having said that, Dan has just produced an exceptionally dreadful service game showing no patience or care at all, which he lost to love.

Who is the more experienced player on court today? Dan.....you have to RESPECT the wind!!!

So the ball is probably moving like a boomerang through the air, but Dan is going for return winners.

*3-5. 100% Dan does NOT deserve to win this - you have to make adjustments, but it's almost like he resents the wind so is playing even MORE aggressively than normal

And a dropshot played on MP down which for me sums up Dan's tactical approach today.

GSM the American, who just kept the ball in play and came to the net when he had an easy chance to do so - nice simple low risk approach - frankly, he probably can't believe his luck that this was all he needed to do to win against the guy who beat Tomic, Nishikori and almost Robredo a few weeks back.
