Things looking better for Mandy - 5*-3 up

And, after two more breaks, smile, Mandy wins the first set 6-4

Yes. I watched the stream last week of Mandy and liked her game but her second serve is poor (her first isn;t great either) so it's no surprise she gets broken a bit. At this level, though, quite a few women have better returns than serves, leading steven to say that Mandy was 'receiving for the match' at 4*-5 ahead last time - which I hadn't heard before and made me smile. (And proved to be right).

But now 4-1 up - looking good . . .

two points away . . .still a chasm . . . one MP (on her opponent's serve but I think that's pretty neutral) ...not to be . .. into a TB

Amanda has just started, losing her first service game to 15 unfortunately

Mandy was definitely 5-3 up, maybe even 5-2 up (not sure).

But now 5-4 . .. come on, girl, now's the moment (still suffering after that match in Belgium (?) where she had it done and dusted and somehow lost). NOW !

She has never beaten a top 250 player before (and probably not an ex-top 100 player either), so perhaps not a big surprise if she is getting a bit nervous as the finishing line approaches.

A good hold this time 6-4 6-5*

Amanda beats a top 250 player at last! Now she gets a chance to 'avenge' Manisha's loss in qualifying.

L32: Amanda Carreras WR 346 beat (6/WC) Laura Pous Tió (ESP) WR 242 (CH 72 in 2012) by 6-4 7-6(4) biggrin

L16: Amanda Carreras WR 346 v (Q) Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov (ESP) WR 632 (= CH)

I think she should beat Zadoinov, although the Spanish/Moldovan has a slightly false ranking being a junior.

Aliona is only 15 years old so is a bit of an unknown quantity. She qualified and then won a $10K event two weeks ago.

For some unknown reason, there is a R1 match still to play in Amanda's quarter (scheduled 2 matches after Amanda's R2 match), so she won't find outher QF opponent until tomorrow. However, it is odds on that it will be 2nd seed Teliana Pereira, the player who beat her in the Buenos Aires 25K Final last year and in Wimbledon qualifying this year.

Edit: Investigating further, maybe they gave Pereira a late start because she won Sevilla last week, though it still doesn't make much sense to put Amanda's R2 on before her R1. In fact, the Brazilian has won 25Ks in each of the last 3 weeks, so is on a 15-match (and 28-set) winning streak.

Chuffed for Mandy. She played a belter of a match last week and was unlucky not to clinch that, so I'm glad to see her progress through the to QFs here. Also means she's cushioned herself a bit more ranking points wise as she has her haul from South America due to come off in next month.
