RE: Week 40 - Kuwait F3 ($10,000) - Meshref (Hard)

maybe Marcus Baghdatis is making a political statement be creating a Yugoslavian alias and making a rise to the top 100?

I've got no idea, but I remembered Steven bringing it up at kuwait F1 I think. Probably just been inactive for so long that it hasnt been updated.

Someone did bring it up on a previous thread, though it wasn't me. It looks like he simply wasn't playing at the time they all had to pick a new country and nobody noticed (or nobody cared) when he did start playing again. Another odd thing is that there is no record for him at all on the ATP site - if you search for Uros Lukic, it returns one result ... Marcos Baghdatis!

I was the one who mentioned it - don't know why - it just jumped out at me. I think everyone's right and it's just a question of age but I liked the idea of him being some die-hard nationalist !

Mind you, I like the fact that Georgia Craven plays for 'England' and not Great Britain. The little flag that comes up against her name is the St George cross and always throws me.

I am not sure how someone could be a die-hard Yugoslav nationalist. Serbian nationalist yes, Croatian nationalist yes, but a Yugoslav nationalist doesn't make much sense since the country was a completely artificial creation.

Yes, I thought someone would pick me up on that !!!!! You know what I mean - some die-hard Tito-esque communist, or something like that, hidden out in the mountains, not even knowing that it had all broken up - I'll stop now, my history is pretty awful, as is blindingly obvious ! (And with apologies to Mr. Lukic . . . )

L32:

(6) Lewis Burton WR 692 v Ali Ghareeb (KUW) WR 1524 (CH 1345 back in 2003 ! - but he's only 27 . . .)
(Q) Lewis Thomson UNR v Matias Castro (ARG) WR 1100 (CH 975 in 2009)
(2) Marcus Willis WR 410 v (Q) Ken Onishi (JPN) UNR

Ken is the youngster (17) that took Marcus very close last week.
Castro is the bloke that Lewis Burton beat 6-3 6-0 last week.
And Ali Ghareeb (one win in the last two weeks) is not to be confused with Mohammad Ghareeb who won the first futures.
(The rankings above are the projected ones by steven for the GB men and the old ones for the others)

Marcus Willis has drawn the 5 ft 4 samurai warrior Kendo Onishi again this week

Draw looks promising partly cod last weeks winner in the top end of the draw .

Racism is now OK on this board??

We support the Brits but I still don't think we should be using derogatory terms like that about our player's opponents. Out of order

Cheers, CD, for all the info.

For draw details, I do think it potentially less confusing if folk would stick to existing actual rankings ( as I assume folk normally do ), rather than introduce projections / guesstimates, until the official new rankings come out.

In 2005 Mima jausovec ( juniorWimbledon winner )

&french open champ ( 70s ) stayed with me when she was senior invitational player

Anyway The all england had her down as Yugoslavia national

They then changed it eventually to Slovenia but it took some doing .

My experience of the Balkans is that the separate states were forced together by TIto after WW2 and it was on

Yugoslavia was formed after WW1. In simple terms the Slavic areas that had been occupied by Austria-Hungary joined with Serbia to form Yugoslavia.

I've taken the offending term out of the original post and the quote, since I agree with John that it does cross the bit of fun/potentially offensive line.

That's a line we go quite close to quite often, but usually in fun with no malicious intent. I think Garry meant this one just in fun too, but doing a quick bit of research, it does seem to cross the line.

Yes, I am sure Gary meant no offense, but you guys sometimes need to make a call and the word that comes up a few times after googling is "derogatory".

 Oh dear.

Hey Gary, take this nonsense elsewhere please. Completely idiotic.

Second brownof here. don't be so ridiculous. There is no justification for being racially abusive to a 17 year old lad for what his ancestors did to your ancestors 80 odd years ago.

Well phrased, freerider.

NB Just noticed that our Yugoslav (Uros Lukic) is listed as Croatian on the ITF live scores (though still Yugoslav on the ITF site). Which helps clear that one up . . .
