M1: Heather Watson WR 162 beat Sorana Cîrstea (ROU) WR 26 (CH 21 in Aug) by 6-7(6) 6-1 6-4
M2: Johanna Konta WR 118 lost to Simona Halep (ROU) WR 10 (= CH) by 1 & 4
M3: Watson & Rae lost to Begu & Niculescu (ROU) by 0 & 2
That's Judy's first loss at Group I level (after 9 wins - GB actually had an 11-tie Group I winning streak going into this one) and means Romania will top Pool B whatever happens tomorrow - even if they lose to Latvia, they will have won 2 ties and only the winners of GBR v HUN will also have 2 wins, which means that as a 2-way tie, it would go to H2H and ROU have beaten both GBR and HUN.
Similarly, Latvia will finish last in Pool B whatever happens (because they have lost against both GBR and HUN), so the winners of GBR & HUN will finish 2nd and the losers 3rd. There are still plenty of Fed Cup ranking points available, so although being seeded high didn't do us any favours this time, on balance it usually would and it is worth putting everything into the remaining ties this week.

Whilst it's always disappointing to lose, Heather did remarkably well to win her match in this tie so we can't be too upset.
I think the lack of media attention could now work in our favour as with the Winter Olymipcs taking up the column inches there is (hopefully) no space for another unbalanced and unfair "Britain lose again" headline.

Well it wouldn't be unfair, as we've not managed to escape the Europe/Africa Zone Group in a large number of attempts.......albeit the previous 2 years arguably we had a much better shot at it. Laura losing to Ormachea in Argentina being the most disappointing for me, although not altogether surprising. To be fair to the Argentinian she played very well and did a lot more more than simply keeping the ball in play and waiting (for Laura's UEs to outnumber Laura's winners), which probably would have been enough anyway. But that was then.....
Romania are a better side than us full stop. Halep is a class act. Hev did very well against Cirstea.
As for balance, the newspapers could say that Judy is a great team captain, that the girls tried really hard, and that they are all really nice people......but I'm sure the British public would realise that anyway, and it wouldn't make great copy. I wouldn't expect much coverage because it was always unlikely we could win.
I think we can rely on Hev to play above herself for years to come for the Fed Cup team, just like Bally could be relied upon to do. It's hard to know what we're going to get from Laura......
