Fed Cup 2014 - Europe/Africa Zone Group I

It has just been announced that Group I will be held in Budapest, Hungary next year (w/c 3 Feb) - fortunately, they are playing it on indoor hard, not (indoor or outdoor) clay!

The teams taking part and their current Fed Cup rankings are:

15 Belgium (Flipkens 20, Wickmayer 67)
17 Great Britain (Robson 38, Watson 76)
21 Ukraine (Svitolina 39, Tsurenko 68)
22 Belarus (Azarenka 2, Govortsova 87)

26 Austria (Meusburger 57, Mayr-Achleitner 115)
27 Bulgaria (Pironkova 101, Kostova 277)
28 Croatia (Vekic 77, Tomljanovic 88, Martic 92)
30 Hungary (Babos 105, Czink 234)

31 Portugal (Larcher de Brito 108, Koehler 119)
32 Netherlands (Bertens 86, Hogenkamp 176)
33 Slovenia (Hercog 81, Majeric 123)
35 Romania (Halep 18, Cirstea 21, Niculescu 42, Cadantu 71)

36 Israel (Peer 84, Glushko 97)
38 Turkey (Buyukakcay 147, Ozgen 214)
48 Luxembourg (Minella 116, Kremer 745)
58 Tunisia (Jabeur 163, nobody else ranked)

63 Latvia (Marcinkevica 232, Ostapenko 638)

Edit: Added in the top 2 singles players for each country as at 23 Sep plus any additional players in the WTA singles top 100. Of the 4 Romanians listed, only Cirstea played this year - if more of them play next year, they could be quite scary!

Worst case scenario? Probably in the 5 team pool with Croatia, Romania, Israel and Latvia. That would be very unfortuante!

Yes, I had just been thinking that there was a potential Group of Death in there !

We could do with Croatia and Romania not being in our half of the draw as well as not being in our group!

Given that Budapest is more accessible than Eilat (even if not as sunny!) and that Hungary and 5 of the 7 nations that border Hungary are all involved, there could be a lot more fans there than last year.

Right mind made up, looks like I'm going to make the trip.

Newcastle-Gatwick-Budapest, arrive the weekend before the start, watch a bit of practice, maybe see a little of Budapest, stay in 2 different hotels, one right next door to the venue. Get the union jack trousers out ;), support Team GB to the max.

paulisi said he might be able to make the trip, anyone else fancy it ??

It's a bit further than Umag - but not much wink

Will have to look at my finances and work commitments

As Phil said, i would like to go, but i need to get time off work, so maybe fly out on Thursday night(work permitting) and stay the weekend.

The venue(i 'm certain) is around 5km from the city centre next to the football ground, so it will take 10-15 mins in a taxi, if you stay in the city centre.(i have passed the venue in a taxi previously)

I assume you should be able to buy tickets on the day, especially if the Hungarians haven't qualified.

I get the impression that its nowhere near a sellout, so buying on the day would be fine.

I'll be goingsmile. I've got two weeks off work to do some sightseeing round Europe culminating in getting to Budapest probably on Tuesday night.

I will be staying in the hotel right next to the venue for convenience. Hopefully GB will be playing the later session of the two which will allow for some sightseeing in the morning.

We'll be outnumbering the locals at this rate ;) That's the official hotel believe it or not. Just realised it probably won't start until Wednesday eventhough the ticket site says 4-8 Feb.

It'll start Tuesday if we are the group of 5 I think.
