Week 39 - ITF ($25K) - Loughborough, UK Hard

Just 3 GB direct entries - Sam, Tara and Jade. Mel, Lucy, Katie and Freya have wildcards.

Qualifying draw is out. One GB player guaranteed qualification, but Anna F and Anna S should get through.

A few interesting ties:

Beth Askew gets the Swede that Lauren beat

Dasha v Rona again

Jazzy Drew may well beat Jess Ren and Ceire Mullins v Sabrina could be interesting....

She was quoted last week as saying she hates playing indoors, that Shrewsbury would be her only indoor tournament and that she was off to play tournaments in warmer climes this autumn.

The other question that I guess the LTA may ask is why has Naomi gone to France to play a similar tournament and not supported her own countries event?

Worth mentioning how many of our under-18s are playing:

Georgina Axon take the crown for youngest player, at only 14 years old.
Georgia Lawson is also 14 (but 9 months older than Georgina).

Age 16, there's Ceire Mullins and Alannah Griffin

Age 17, there's Louise Ronaldson and, of course, Harriet Dart. (Lots of 18 year-olds too).

(NB Peter too, is Jess Ren definitely playing Dommie Covington ? The draws seems to have Jess against Jazzamay Drew ?)

Perhaps because Naomi is a professional tennis player, who may feel the surface / conditions for the French tournament suit her more.

Given past history, she is also unlikely to feel she owes the LTA anything and, related to that, which tournament is most likely to be financially beneficial must be a high priority.

I know she used to train in France, not sure of her current situation.

Naomi's club is Clermont-Ferrand (i.e. where the 25k is taking place).

She's been with them for two years (at least). They pay her to be a member of their league team (don't know if she actually trains there much but she might, and certainly has the right to).

I doubt she has any obligation to take part but she must have a lot of friends there and want to support them as obviously they've been supporting her.

Q1: LAWSON, Georgina (GBR) WC UNR lost to JEGIOLKA, Justyna (POL) (1) 447 6-0 6-3
Q1: AXON, Georgina (GBR) WC UNR lost to BARBAT, Karen (DEN) (2) 585 6-0 6-0
Q1: RONALDSON, Louise (GBR) UNR lost to FRANKOVA, Nikola (CZE) (11) 1021 6-1 6-2
Q1: DART, Harriet (GBR) UNR def. GIBSON, Aimee (GBR) UNR 6-2 6-0

The seeds coming through easily as expected. Harriet plays Jegiolka next so that'll be interesting.

Dasha has been beaten again by Rona.
I'm trying to work out if Dasha's good run over in Egypt(?) was a blip or she has just had a bad couple of weeks.

Sabrina taking another beating, just 8 DF's so far - still looks like she has the serving yips.

Dasha is hard to figure out - some encouraging results indoors early in the year, followed by a slump. Then recently she had a good series in Egypt and now two losses against Rona who I guess has a game that troubles her greatly... I know so very little about how Dasha plays - is she an aggressive player? Counter puncher? All court?

Beth Askew lost a very tight first set - 7-6 (5) - to the no. 3 seed WR 628

Beth pinches the second set 7-5, so into a 3rd. I expected the Lauren v Katy match to be close, but Katy took the first set 6-0

Beth Askew has won the second set 7-5. She's a great athlete, with a good mental toughness. C'mon Beth for the third !

Alannah was 4-1 up but has been pegged back to 4-4 by the WR 1027. (Anna S. winning easily, at the moment, and Katy Dunne too).
