Lost 1st round yesterday to Roca 36 62 36. Tough battle in the heat with a surreal ending. At 3-4 in the 3rd set I had to go for an emergency bathroom break which the umpire told me was ok. What I didn't realise was that I had to be back within 90seconds and that if I didn't I would start incurring game penalties. Unfortunately it would have been impossible to make it back anyway in that time as the toilets were 300m away from my court. On returning to the court the supervisor and umpire had agreed to give the match to my opponent as I had incurred two game penalties for "delay of play". The umpire before i went told me that i had time and when i returned he massively backtracked with the supervisor there. I am still puzzled by the decision and will be writing to the ITF about it. There is an awful lot of leniency on rules in Futures and it amazes me that they enforced a rule that was impossible to adhere to because of the distance from my court to the clubhouse. This with the fact that when i asked the umpire twice beforehand he never once mentioned 90seconds, have made the decision even more unexplained.
NB he also says that he's really looking forward to this week as it's where he lived from 2006-2009
