Not wanting to re-hash the whole thing but re john's point, which is interesting (namely 'any proof that Marcus lacks fitness'), I posted a few weeks ago that Marcus was overweight. I also said he was most definitely a big guy, with huge knees and that he put me in mind of Baghdatis (barrel-chested and chunky). But he was still overweight. Not wanting to be specific, I still think that.

I also said that I had no idea about his fitness and that most medical people say 'better fat and fit' than skinny and unfit. (I didn't even see his match because he won by retirement two games in). i.e. John and others may well be 100% right and that Marcus has superb cardio etc. fitness. Gary's comments about his fitness in the gym may bear this out.

My other (purely theoretical) comment about playing another hour's tennis in 43 degrees was also not specific to Marcus - I'd have made the same comment if Lewis were playing. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke is about control of core temperature and fluids. Weight and fitness is a factor but only indirectly - many extremely fit (and skinny) athletes suffer from it every year.

However, I agree with RJA's comment (re losing kilos without losing power) and one other thing is important : being overweight is not only a problem (or not) for fitness.; it is also a important injury risk factor.

Tennis physios cite knee problems, followed by back problems, as the two most common injuries caused/exacerbated by being overweight.

I think it's great that Marcus has come forward and asked Gary to fix up a proper training/fitness/diet regime. I imagine that it won;t be easy but it may be just the ticket. He could be our new star . . .

Big gap. I'm wondering about a MTO (or regular bathroom break). Could be a glitch of course.

So its now up to him to transform the fortunes of britains most underachieving sport, a game that welcomes the world for a splendid fortnight every summer and sits back to let the rest of them show us how its done, most apart from this year, thank god for andy murray if he wasnt around british tennis wouldnt even get a mention. How much money have the LTA wasted, staff have come and gone and a lack of coinfidence pervades the LTA, so Draper was a shooting duck, the fall guy, try as he undoubtedly has done, the job of british tennis has proved too much, to me spending a lot of money on foreign coaches, Brad Gilbert, Peter Lundgren, for example to help the elite performance players hasn't worked out, LTA funding cut from £24.5m to £17.4m for the next four year cycle up to 2017, as they are not making best use of the cash that is provided and their resources and its only going to get worse before it gets better, tennis is an elitest sport and for British tennis to be successful this has to change. I read about A1 tennis academy and they are trying to change this by provided children that are not well off with a way to get involved in the game and maybe some future stars will be born by giving them free memberships. If British tennis wants to be success it has to look at the way it's funding it's elite performance program's and look at grass roots tennis getting a child to pick up a racket a the age of 4 etc every where I go I see empty tennis courts and sometime tennis clubs with nobody playing. So keep up the good work A1 tennis academy maybe you can produce a Wimbledon champion and show how the LTA how to be a success. "

Klek serves it out and wins the third set 6-4.

Shame, but 10 points is nice. Would be interesting to hear Marcus' take on the match if he didn't mind.

Good luck for next week too.

Are you an employee of Gary Lewis? Perhaps the young graduate from Leeds university who he hired this week?
