I really hope Dom gets the nod with Flembo. Would be great for him to have a go in a "live" rubber.
A 5-setter on clay won't really do Muzza any favours. Better to be fresh to take out Querry, whatever the result in the dubs. Even if Muzza plays, would say they're the underdogs, only slightly less so than if BBD plays.
I guess Muz will want to play, and if he says he wants to though, pretty rough to say no (particularly as he has found his DC mojo again!)

Sam Querrey's face from the middle of set 4 was extraordinary - like a lost sheep straring into spce on the brink of tears. biggrin

That's typical Querrey. He is a good player but has no stomach for the fight. He went from not facing a break point to being broken 5 times in a row which for a player who was recently top 20 is beyond pathetic.

The reason why Ward was my pick to play this tie ahead of Edmund is that he has proven in the past that he can tough it out in 5 set encounters and that was why I thought he had a chance against Querrey in what was expected to be the 5th rubber.

Part of me wants to agree with everyone and tell Leon to let Dom have his day...but by doing so we are effectively putting our number 2 team up (Dom has never played a live rubber or played with Fleming so despite his higher ranking he would be the number 2 option) and psychologically that's huge. That's saying, we don't think we're going to win today so we'll think about tomorrow - and that's the kind of thing that can trip you up.

Unless there are serious concerns about Murray's health now - not about the chance he might hurt himself whilst playing - then surely we have to put him in the doubles and show the Americans that even though they have the number one team in the world, we think we can close this out on Saturday so now the pressure is on you to prove us wrong.

I can appreciate what you sre saying Imoen, and you put interesting arguements.

But pragmatically for me, Colin and Dom remain my doubles choice, and from my point of view nothing to do with wanting to give Dom his day ( other than he's a pretty good player to be able to throw in ). I reckon I am consistent in team events in first and foremost wanting the WIN.

Psychologically such a selection may well give the US a bit of a much needed boost ( they still need to win that doubles ), but I don't see that saving Querrey from the fate that would await against Andy, a confident looking and rested Andy.

Andy looked on fire against Young I would rest him for the doubles let Inglot see what he can do with Fleming

I found this interesting comment about Wardy on a lowbrow tennis forum

But i can't believe it is this men i see in challenger , in challenger he really looks to have no game , and very bad altitude ... looks totally desinterested and doesn't fight

But in davis cup he is so good !

To say wardy has no fight is a joke haven't they heard of John bull and any way he's got a Dan grade in Karate ! Lol

Oh, and referring back to Gary's post, I would certainly not be just picking doubles players for the team and then the rubber based on world rankings ( though they are clearly indicative ) and most certainly not prioritising pairs who regularly play together ( although all things being equal it does help ).

I like the Skupskis, and they are making solid progress, but suggesting them as the selection, give me a break !!

For me, any combination of Andy, Colin and Dom clearly stands a much better chance than they would ever do.

A World Group Davis Cup tie is not some selling point for doubles or reward for consistent pairs. It is an important match to be won. I thought you were a big Davis Cup supporter, Gary, would you not want to win over such gestures ?

I have to confess I caved in and went to bed after the 3rd set.

What a brilliant surprise this morning to see that James had won! So glad I left it recording - I watched the 4th and 5th before I got on with anything else!

Fantastic "never say die" fight from James.

Brilliant captaincy from Leon.

Oh yes, and Andy did pretty well too!

Good job it's not up to us to pick the doubles team - let's trust Leon

Argentina have taken the first set in the doubles.

Germany and France are already through.

I wonder if the LTA are thinking they'd better start putting in a provisional booking for somewhere big on the off-chance of a blockbuster semi-final at home to Switzerland in September. Such a long way to go, so many ways it could not happen ... but even if the players have to concentrate on one rubber at a time, as fans we're allowed to dream, aren't we?  And you'd think the LTA ought to take all plausible possibilities into account to avoid being left in a mess later.

Just added a straw poll - just a bit of fun since there's not likely to be a need for another poll on this thread. Apparently, a similar BBC straw poll on Twitter produced a very clear result.

Pairs are listed in alphabetical order with a catch-all "Ward and anyone" included just in case LOL

You've got an hour before the pairing is announced.

Whatever my own views based on very limited info, I trust Leon to make the call and to do it for the right reasons.

Just out of interest, anyone know why Russia has played Khachanov in both singles and doubles? He's done respectably against opposition that's way above him, but it seems like an odd choice. Are others injured?

By the way, the Beeb has preempted the poll - says it's Inglot/Fleming (though nothing official - and I suppose with the BBC's record ... but surely they wouldn't get that wrong?)
