RE: Davis Cup 2014 - World Group Round 1 - 31 Jan-2 Feb - USA v GB

Andy Murray WR 6 beat Donald Young USA WR 79 (CH 38 in 2012) by 6-1 6-2 6-3

A nice echo of the last time we beat the US on clay in 1933, when GB also gave up just 6 games in the first rubber (Bunny Austin beat Ellsworth Vines 6-1 6-1 6-4) ... useless stats R us wink

Never really seen the problem people have with John Lloyd, always seemed such a nice, genuine bloke to me and a very easy commentator to listen to, knows when he needs to talk and has a very good knowledge of the game

To be fair it is when paired with Castle that I really struggle but I find Lloyd tends to ignore the lower levels (he said earlier that Young was the only other option for the American team and Hutchins had to remind him of Sock, Harrison & Klahn) and tends to favour the antiquated ways of playing - he often bemoans the lack of coming to the net and/or serve volleying without seeming to see the merit of the way the game is played now. But counterbalanced by Hutchins he is immeasurably preferable to Castle & Co.

Great start from Andy, he seemed to be hitting the ball with a lot more weight than he did in Australia as well which bodes well for his continued recovery. Now we need a Wardy classic to take us 2-0 up....

Ward is not playing well. Shanking every other ball.

If Ward doesn't pick up his level this match will be less competitive than Murray v Young,

Having been all set to watch Eurosport and avoid JL's commentary I find the alternative is Castle...a catch 22 if ever I heard one

I do love the Davis Cup atmosphere - so belligerent!

I'm confused. I watched the first match on the tv upstairs on BBC, then I came downstairs to watch on Eurosport Player. I haven't heard Castle on either. Did he commentate on Andy's match on Eurosport and then go away?

Rather depressing how James is playing, but he has come back from first set losses before.

Yes Castle was commentating on Andy's match on Eurosport, he must have gone away if he isn't for Ward.

I missed the first set but from what I've seen of the second Querrey is having a good serving day and he always gains confidence from that.
