Andy sounded pragmatic about his loss today but not too happy about that sandy stuff:
'Murray is next scheduled to play in Great Britain's Davis Cup tie against the United States in San Diego later this month, although he is not relishing a switch to clay.
"It's not perfect for rehabbing after back surgery," he said. "Ideally I'd stay on the same surface." '
Nothing there really suggests to me that he will pull out of the tie. All he is doing is stating the obvious, that ideally he would rather not have to switch to clay.
Fortunately he has 3 weeks after that to try and get to near full fitness for Acapulco.
Yes, James possibly pulling out should logically have no real effect on making Andy think we would suddenly have no chance at all. For the bulk of our chances have always rested on himself anyway with his two singles and very probable part in the doubles pair. It just slightly reduces the chances iff James is / was the best option for second singles player.
As for Dom, interesting idea ( or last resort if noone else out there ! ) to have him in with Andy, Kyle and Colin if James is out and doubts re Andy. Note that Dom would only ever play Querrey in the final match if he played on day 1 ( against Isner ) or replaced the GB no 2 after Day 1. If he had to replace Andy for day 3, he'd be playing Isner then !
For singles here, Dan Smethurst would be my next in line after James, Kyle and Evo.

I don't think the comment is too alarming as the question was put:
Q. With your short turnaround getting back to full strength, how tough and challenging is this quick switch to clay for Davis Cup now?
So maybe that was the natural answer to come back with.

Oh yes, I certainly wasn't trying to suggest it was something more sinister than just what it appears - that, as you say, he'd rather not be on clay.

I know people on this site won't like this but I will not be impressed if Murray pulls out of a Davies cup tie !

For me that's a no no .
Gary, although I refrained from getting involved in the nonsense that was prevalent when you joined the board, i have throughly enjoyed the 'new' Gary of recent times. But seriously, how many times do people need to tell you. It's DAVIS cup man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To Dwight Davis (or at least to his ghost!), it probably is LOL
And it's not that hard to get it right, surely ...
People also seem to mis-name it the David Cup sometimes, but I assume that's just a typo that results from s and d being next to each other on the keyboard.

It is when you in between business meetings in Tehran and your nervous and in a hurry looking over your shoulder
Joked with Marcus that if he does not get some decent singles points soon will get him playing a tournament out here in an " I love george bush junior " T -shirt
To what Gary said earlier, I too would be not at all impressed if Andy pulled out of this tie ( although surely that won't happen now ), certainly if with as little apparent justification as when he infamously very belatedly pulled out of the Argentina away World Group play off ( my memory is that it pretty universally didn't go down well here ).
PS : Gary, I do hope that you don't get the names spectacularly wrong of any highly regarded Iranians :)
Given that Mr Murray has gone to San Diego and begun practice, thus making clear that he has every intention of doing what he can for the team, one would assume that if he were to pull out, it would be because there were genuine grounds for concern. In which case, one would presumably need to trust his judgement, no?
