Watched the last game of South vs Ren (thanks Korriban for the link). Mel won comfortably 6-0 6-1. She walloped the returns and followed in for some drive volleys... looking forward to catching some of Katie B vs Anna S next.
However Ms Ren was beaten by Ms South by 0 & 1. Ms South barely had to break sweat to win as Ms Ren appeared to have no weapons at all with which to move her opponent away from a fairly central spot about 2 feet inside the baseline......on the few occasions she was able to get the serve back into play. I'd like to know what the km/h differential was between the two players on groundstrokes. A lot, for sure.
Difficult to tell if Mel can get back to her best, as today wasn't a proper test, but when she's set up for it.......boy she can pack a punch!
Great opportunity for Katie. I guess for Jess R too, but less so...
Well it would be ... if they were due to play each other! I saw this and thought, oops, did I miss this one when I tweeted there there was only one all-GB match?
Both the ITF and LTA site draws show Katie playing 7th seed Coin and Jess playing Daniels with the winners meeting in R2. I like Peter's confidence about them meeting though!
Everything else is fine apart from the small typo in Mel's ranking. Anyway, amending and adding in the H2Hs, which might surprise you ...
Edit: I see CD noticed too. The ranking discrepancies you might notice are because Peter and I have used today's new rankings - one of the opponents has moved up a fair bit, the other down.

Katie has started by breaking Anna 2-0. She did, however, just hit an awful smash into the net - though I imagine the racket Oceane Adam is making on the next court might be rather off putting.

It looks like the umpire on Katie and Anna's court has complained about the noise......and, of course, it's made no difference whatsoever.
Katie *3-1. From the first few games looks like Katie has a barnstormer of a 2 handed backhand, but her forehand is lacking power, loopy but without much topspin (Wozniacki style) and very error prone. Something to really work on to make it into a weapon. But a cracking backhand!
Katie takes the 1st set 6-2. When I last watched Anna play, way back in 2010, her forehand was a lot weaker. Yes she's hit a fair few errors off it today, but it looks like a more aggressive shot than I remembered it...
GSM by the looks of things as it looks like Anna has thrown in the towel. Injury? Unwell?
Brilliant result for Lauren, winning 6-3 6-1 against the WR 694 from Sweden. And played well too.
That really is a great result for her at her home club - Ulvefeldt is up to WR 628 today (having been runner-up in Antalya two weeks ago) and not only is it a career best ranking scalp by miles (her previous best was Betancourt WR 1074 in Wrexham last year), it also gets her WTA singles ranking back
