RE: Week 38 - Challenger (€42,500+H) - Trnava, Slovakia (Clay)

If Kyle is to win this tournament, as per his instructions, he will most likely need to get past Bedene in round 2. The Slovenian has just won the challenger in Bosnia. Tough draw, but it will be like that every week from now on, we hope.

Would be great for Kyle to win this but lets keep some sense of perspective. Expecting him to suddenly start winning challengers would be very silly. A couple of QFs or SF would represent very good progress that we should be pleased with.

I agree.

I like the fact that his aim (according to his dad) is to get enough points to make the Aussie qualies which means (a) win this tournament, or (b) pick up some points here and carry on picking up more points (c) get knocked out and then really have to pick up a lot more points i.e. not rocket science, but perfectly sensible.

But I think 'expecting' him to win is off the scale. I also think he'll have a really big ask against Bedene. But all is possible . . .

I know. And I agree. Noone should expect anything more than steady progress, and Kyle has had no success at Challenger level....because he's barely played at this level.

But if his coaching team (who have proved themselves both sensible and measured to date, and have been planning his schedule with care towards the long term) are now giving him "stretch goals" which include winning big tournaments like this, then it does mean that they think Kyle's not too far away from a big breakthrough even at this much higher level...........and as his ranking is likely to have a 2 at the beginning within weeks anyway, going deep in Challengers has to be his next goal.

I think a couple of QFs and a SF would be superb by year end, but his team obviously think he can shoot for the stars!

Desparately disppointed for Oli. What a dreadful year he has had for injuries. If you are reading this Oli, Speedy Recovery.

I actually heard the news from Kyle's dad yesterday, who had himself learned of the injury by reading this forum !!

Not just his dad.  Leon confirmed the same last night.  He was asked about Evo and Wardy getting into either MD or Qualies for the Aussie Open, but in answering he added that they hoped Kyle would make it too. They genuinely believe he has a good chance to make it.

There's nothing funny about Oli's injury, obviously, but I had to laugh reading the last bit

It's actually good to find out that sometimes we help to keep those more directly involved informed though

The tournament has started to pay players in qualifying a grand on arrival to help them out so you might see a few more players going over.

Apparently a lot of the coaches and support staff use GBTennis and your tweets as the best way of keeping up with results etc.  You are more appreciated than you may have imagined smile

There seems to be a rain delay holding up Kyle's match

Strange goings on or a technical glitch I think. Centre Court and Court 5 are on but Kyle's court and one other are not.

The forecast is for rain, I bet that is the problem.  Nobody on court at the moment.
