If I were a neutral, just watching a singles match, I would agree with Korriban in that I wouldn't say that Dom's groundshots are particularly good. He's often off-balance and slightly out of position (hence a lot of UE and slightly mis-hit balls). But he has the makings of good shots - if he wanted to work on it.
But it was his serve that won him that match. Not only did it win him his games but, I think, it seriously rattled the Russian, who's not used to a guy ranked WR 1000 rattling aces past him left, right and centre. I think it threw Alex K. and put a lot of pressure on him when he served. And he played truly dreadfully at times !
Steven seemed to imply that Dom was doing this purely to keep a singles ranking because his singles points were about to roll off. Although I don't quite know why he wants/needs a singles ranking if he's only going to play once or twice a year ?
But it was good to see him doing it. I enjoyed it . . . hope Dom did too ! And on to the next round . . . .
Excellent result - 12pts is a bonus and it may tempt him to play singles a few more times. Obviously carrying a ranking will give Dom more chance of getting into qualifying if he so wished to get some court time.
Two more wins and Bob will be getting excited as that could be enough to get him in the top 500!!!!!
Seriously though i do wish some of the doubles players would have a crack at singles more often. May be the LTA could incentivise them? I think Dom's results this week show he could be competitive towards the end of a week in futures and probably in challengers as well.
That's true, but it's all a bonus anyway. If Dom has an amazing serving day, it may be fun to see Fognini's reaction........
When Fognini is good, he's a joy to watch, but when he's off it can be an absolute shocker, and he starts remonstrating with the Gods, the umpire, the ballboys, everyone.........in a comedy Italian way.........great fun!
Far better for someone like Mr Inglot - for whom this is a sideshow, albeit an interesting one - to draw Mr Fognini than for a singles player for whom this is the main event. (On the same thesis, though, a better doubles draw would have been nice!)
Mr Inglot and Mr Huey can share experiences when they next meet up ... unusually busy singles week for both of them!
Speaking of St Petersburg singles, just went on the ATP website for a second and thought "Isn't that the name of the junior who's been having some good results?" It is. Not bad for a first ATP match.

Not sure who you mean. There's no juniors of great note in Russia this week, I think.
Over in Metz, 16 year old Alexander (Sascha) Zverev almost made it through qualies, falling in 3 in the FQR. Is it him you are talking about - so near to coming through to the MD: a great effort.
