I'm delighted that Dom is giving singles a go from time to time - why should anyone expect him to be a brilliant player when he so rarely plays singles. I certainly don't - the weaknesses I mentioned explain precisely why he's been very smart in focussing on doubles, where he can play to his great strengths: big serve, getting the ball in play on return and excellent play at the net.
The only things I'd be concerned about would be his timid approach on BPs, and the fact that his first serves seemed to disappear when close to the finishing line - in that these might also be issues in doubles at the highest level.
The Russian is having kittens with his own level. If he manages to lose this, I'll be delighted, but I fear for a racket or two!
I actually thought he'd played some very good aggressive groundstrokes at times to get himself to the net. Not sure I've seen him miss "most" topspin shots at all!
That's because he hasn't, which is why I didn't say it.
I was referring to the very few "forcing" topspun shots he attempted in the first set, which mostly were unsuccessful. His safe topspin rally balls were generally fine but didn't really develop the point, and his excellent approach shots tended to be on the BH slice, not topspin.
I think Dom's ground strokes have been pretty good. He comes over the ball a lot on the backhand but can mix it up with slice if he wants and he has hit pretty consistent forehand (more consistent than the russians!)
Seriously, not watching, so no idea how he's played, but he's effectively made the better job of that first set because he won it.
That's right. Which is why I gave a balanced view of his good points (serve, approach/net) and not so good points (forcing groundstrokes, mobility, BP timid play). If that's having a go, then you are reading only the bits you want to read.

In fairness to Korriban, from the passages of play I've seen, Dom has been rather passive at times when he has had BP opportunities - there have been exceptions. I wouldn't say that he was playing that bad though and he's taking a good crack at a volatile and inconsistent opponent.

He's taking more than a crack. he's only gone and won!!
