Laura wins in straight sets, as she should do given the opponent.

She tried to make hard work of it and almost succeeded. As it is though, 1 hour 12 minutes is a nice short match in these conditions (as the match to determine Laura's opponent has only had one set in 1 hour 5 minutes)

Welll done, Laura !

Add with Cirstea out and other upsets well possible, it's a very open tournament. I'm a mega Laura fan - she'll be top 20 before you know it ! (And top 10 too)

Good, got there in the end with a little sprint for Jan's benefit.

Sounds as if now that she's played a match, she will have to up her level for what's to come.

Laura plays wildcard Saisai Zheng, ranked 157 in round 2. Zheng is 15 days younger than Laura.

Zheng won in a 2 hour 50 minute marathon today so might be a bit tired.

I would expect Laura to beat Saisai, but the QF might be a bit more of a test. Shevdova/Zheng/Babos/Lepchenko. Although in reality she should be able to beat these players on a good day.
Jovanovski looks the danger in the top half of the draw.

Very surprised that Laura was pre tournament favourite given well she doesn't win tournaments, hasn't reached a QF this year ( saving her least impressive results for WTA Internationals where she should have ) and has been injured.

But would be great if she did win the thing.

PS : just saved myself from the sin of "should of" rather than "should have" !

The tournament website, although not working very well has Laura's post match PC, where she says that she was happy with the 1st set but not the second hence why she went out after the match and practiced her forehand.
