Such a shame, rain break did her no favours it would seem Zheng just able to tough out the big points in the 2nd and 3rd sets. On to Tokyo.
I don't think it made any difference to be honest. She won the first point on resumption. Had Zheng closed out the set without any rain I think we'd still be talking about a loss in 3.
Unless the onset of rain suddenly came at *4-2 in the breaker, in which case it was raining on both sides of the court, it's hard to blame that as the reason for the drop off in service performance (remembering how well she held at *4-5 and *5-6) or the double fault, as opposed to just getting tight as is often the case.

One of my reasons for suggesting that is that she didn't deal with a similar situation very well in Miami against Cornet when there were a couple of interruptions during the match. To be fair she did fight hard in that last set, most of the games went to deuce, but Zheng by then was winning the big points.
So I make that Laura, Joko, Kyle, Marcus, Imran - five out of five GB losses today ! Looks like it's up to Laura D. and Tom Hill to fly the flag . . . no pressure . . .
It will be a very rare week to have no GB singles players on a Friday
I think Laura handled the long rain delay quite well in the US Open but that was just before the match had started and also when there is a delay of several hours it probably requires a different approach (switching off for a while) to a short delay (where maintaining focus would be better).
I'm sure that it is just inexperience though, as Laura is still young and has generally been very lucky when it comes to getting matches done in one go - the Cornet match and today are just about the only examples I can think of.
The match situation during a delay can certainly affect things too. I was at Wimbledon watching Aga in 2011 and she was in control of the match and a couple of points away from victory when it started raining. When she didn't win after the rain it was her opponent, Cetkovska, who was much more ready mentally for another set of tennis and she pulled off the upset.
According to a brief match report on the website, Laura became a little irritable in the final set and played very impatient.
Sounds like the old obsession with Hollywood winners off the wrong ball, when patience and working the point would give Laura a better chance to attack off the right ball. Impatience. Lack of endurance. Or simply can't resist.....who knows why she still does this so much, even after so much work behind the scenes. And oftentimes, the look of disgust on her face after yet another forehand attempted winner goes 10 feet long says "why do I keep doing that".
The irony for me is the following piece which she did for The Tennis Space, published today.
Now there's someone I can think of who might benefit more than most from taking some of Robbo's advice.......guess who?! I actually started laughing when reading this.....
Worth Laura pinning it up in her locker as a reminder before a match or say before a resumption after a rain delay.
Indeed! You know, sometimes I imagine there's a small Devil sitting on Laura's left shoulder whispering in her ear before every shot "marmalise it! you can make that shot! go for the lines! pull the trigger! show the crowd what you've got!" or words to that effect......with an angel on the other shoulder saying "wait for the right ball"; "make her run some more"; "keep your discipline", etc.
Haha, Laura can say dirty words to me any time she likes

Yes, even Tom and Laura D didn't quite make it - feeling quite bereft

It will ... but it wasn't so long ago that it used to be very common, even sometimes in weeks when GB Futures were being held!
