Re James, and RJA's point about the level of LTA support (and I don't know the actual answer), in the match I saw there were two NTC guys sitting to one side who clapped James from time to time but they were also watching Alex Jhun's match on the court behind, and clapping Alex as much if not more than James (coz there was more to clap ?).
There was one man who was sitting separately and was 100% for James, who I took at first to be James' father (about the right age) but, on reflection, he didn't look anything like him and spoke with a (Spanish?) accent and I then thought maybe it's his coach from Spain.
So I'm not sure but I'd agree that the NTC didn't seem too bothered.
I'm not sure if he's been injured, lost confidence, how he used to play, how he's playing now in comparison and definitely no idea as to what should be done - but, net net, it was the most disappointing of all the performances I saw, just extremely average. He seemed a nice kid and was trying hard and you couldn't fault him in that regard but there was just nothing to be really positive about (certainly not for someone ranked about WR 500).
Re Marcus, ktttt, I don;t agree that people shouldn't crticise because he's had such a good year. In fact, it's precisely because we all recognise that he's had an amazing year that people make the remarks. If he looked like that AND had had poor results, no one would bother commenting. He's got great talent, hits a beautiful ball but (rather in the Dan Evans mould) people want him to up the ante and take his tennis really seriously to make the most of his talent before it's too late (which he's obviously doing to some extent but there's a LONG way to go). And, yes, as I said before, he is a big-boned bloke (huge knees and calves) and, yes, better 'fat and fit' (to coin the phrase) than skinny and out of shape. But physique is a relatively easy thing to address and top level sport is very unforgiving.
Add: this post crossed with those above but there seems to be a consensus !

It is very wet in West London this morning, but thankfully the rain has stopped....
I just called the NTC to ask if matches had started (the OoP has an 11 o'clock kick-off but no sign as yet on live scores). The lady said that, no, and to the best of her knowledge they were waiting to start the matches outside rather than inside (which makes sense given the forecast is that it's going to keep brightening up).
Ed battling through his TB . . . but Tyler takes it (7-4)
And Marcus shows them all how it's done, back in the clubhouse with a 6-2 6-1 win (but, as I said, anyone who'd seen James M current level of play could not be remotely surprised . . )
Marcus beat James 2&1. Just the 5 breaks of serve to zero.
As CD's report from the Tuesday suggested, James clearly isn't playing well at all. He's just about beaten 2 opponents he ought to be beating easily this week, then as soon as he comes up against a "player", albeit one who probably isn't even remotely fit by pro standards, he is absolutely taken apart.
What an earth is going on? On one level I really feel for James and the likes of George Morgan, but with all the support and backing over the years they have received from the LTA, and the fact that they and 1 or 2 others have been earmarked as potential stars amongst the wider population of players, to be resoundingly beaten again today and to see your ranking edging slowly backwards does beg a few questions about what is going on at the coalface. This isn't a blip, it's been a trend.
This Mr Willis must be quite a talent.......if only he could......well we all know the rest!
I may be a bit late to this, but I do feel the criticism of Willis is quite unfair. First of all he is, and always has been, a big build. Secondly, to put in this criticism in a year where he has risen up the rankings by over 500 places is even more unfair. Thirdly, if you have watched him play, or even seen his results, I really don't think his perceived lack of fitness is an issue. He is quick around the court, and has won an awful lot of 3 set matches, I remember earlier in the year him coming back from down and out on numerous occasions to win in three.
I am not saying he is the perfect professional, and has always liked to joke about and not take things too seriously, but he has come a long way in that respect recently, as evidenced by his excellent year to date, and to criticise his efforts this year, of all years is quite unfair.
