Great win for Alex Onwards and upwards. I wonder how far he can go..
Just curious, was he someone who hadn't been in shape in the past? And did he not look in shape today? Just wondering because he posted a photo 3 months ago (granted a lot can change in that time) where he looked in pretty good condition. http://instagram.com/p/aObs4hqQuE/
Wow! Impressive. Mind you, if you put in THAT much work, any drop off in intensity will show and turn to tyres very quickly unless you also drop your calorie intake - my view is that he looks naturally stocky, so will need to work harder than most in order not to let things go. I certainly know the feeling!

Ah yes. Very true. Hopefully he keeps it up. Would be great to see his form continue to improve and get more wins like that.
QF: Alex Ward WR 346 vs (6) Renzo Olivo (ARG) WR 201
If Alex can see off the world n° 83, surely Larry Olive Tree from Argentina should present no problems...
Well I wouldn't say that because he's a clay court specialist, however there are strong grounds for optimism looking at the Argentinian's profile and year to date tournament success.

You can split his year into 2 blocks:
1. South America.
- 9 Tournaments
- 6 scoring tournaments (two thirds)
- 140 ATP ranking points achieved.
- Average of over 15 points per tournament
2. Europe (incl a detour to US Open qualies)
- 12 Tournaments
- just 4 scoring tournaments (one third)
- 38 ranking points achieved.
- Ave. of about 3 points per tournament.
You get the point I'm making...........
Indeed I do, korriban, but my remark was made tongue in cheek, hence the . I fully accept that a possibly unexpected victory for a particular player over one ranked more highly than he (or she) in one round is not a cast-iron guarantee that s/he will go on to conquer a player ranked less highly than the first opponent in the next round (hope I've explained that clearly enough).

Forgot to mention the ice bath that i just had! Wasn't nice but maybe punishment for the fact i needed 7 matchpoints to eventually get over the line!

Another day, another battle and thankfully another win! Managed to overcome Kuznetsov 46 75 75. Very pleased with the outcome and more importantly how i played. As Kuznetsov is ranked 83 in the world, this was my first top 100 win on clay which gives me some added satisfaction. Quarters tomorrow...
Well done Alex. We'd like you to know that we all suffered with your 7 match points too (although we might be skipping the ice bath bit . . . )

Of course I realised your comment was tongue in cheek!
A much later start for Alex tomorrow (n/b 18.00 BST) may require a bit of adjustment, but it's the same for both players since Olivo was first match on today too.

I may be completely wrong, as one not connected with the LTA at all, but it feels as if recently some of the non-Team Aegon players who have been doing really well have been getting more access to coaching etc than had been the case in the past. Others will know whether that's an accurate impression or not ....
Tremendous work from Mr Ward. Must be very pleasant for him to realise that he really is a Challenger-level player now. (Well, may be pleasant when he gets over losing such a close match)
