Week 37 - Challenger (€42,500+H) - Seville, Spain (Clay)

QR1: Nikki Roenn UNR v (q6) Denis Zivkovic (USA) WR 648

The top seed in qualifying was a long way below Alex on the Alt list but Alex was 8 out at the last update so I doubt he is here.

Just noticed from one of Alex's tweets that he is in Spain, so that must mean he got in.

Alex's blog, as of wednesday, says he's in Seville but probably only in qualifying.

Guess he made the MD though . . .

Alex did indeed make the main draw after a spate of late withdrawals, mainly from people above him on the alt list.

L32: Alex Ward WR 343 v Alberto Brizzi (ITA) WR 307 (CH 230 in 2010)

Brizzi won 15 matches in a row in Futures last month but went out in R1 of the Alphen Challenger last week.

Pretty good first round draw for a challenger although would probably play Kuznetsov in R2 which is anything but nice.

Question: Why is unranked Nikki Roenn playing Challenger Qualies? Shouldn't he be trying his hand on the Futures circuit first?

Nikki lives in Marbella so my guess is he just enters the tournaments that are relatively close to home, whether they're challengers or futures.

Ah, that would explain some things. Always wondered why he's off playing these Futures events in foreign countries all the time yet never pops up in home events.

Hope he eventually gets a ranking point or two. I guess Nikki must have some rich parents to continue with his "pro" tennis career despite not actually being very good. Fair play to him though, living the dream. I'd do the same :)

No idea about the rich parents.

His website says that he also coaches and specialises in stringing 'personalised' rackets i.e. for people who want non-standard stringing.

It's quite easy in Spain and the south of France to earn a living of sorts coaching and playing tennis - it's all year round, no weather problems, it's a normal, democratic sport i.e. the majority of people play so you've got a big customer base, he may well get paid for playing in the team in league tennis (he's at a pretty swanky club - don;t know their league status but the first team won't be in the fourth division!), if you're a club coach (as well as private) you only teach during term time so you can play tournaments in the other 4-5 months of the year.

(And absolutely no comment on Nikki but private coaching is often very much a 'cash' business).

I wouldn't assume that he's got rich parents or is even 'living the dream' - probably just doing his day job coaching tennis and fitting in matches as and when he can . . .
