Got there in the end! Noone will know from the record books how tortuous it was. At times I was thinking that BOTH players wanted to give away the win, but I'm glad Oli got over the line, and can regard the tournament as a worthwhile experience.
Oli will need to employ a far more positive mindset and be more aggressive against the #4 seed to make an impact.
There is a stark contrast between Oli and Kyle on the court.
- Kyle seems to have far greater speed of movement and athleticism.
- Kyle seems to have more powerful and accurate shots. It may be that he's simply more willing to use his power than Oli.
- Kyle had a few patterns of play which he kept going back to to win relatively quick and easy points - grooved, practiced and effective, ensuring the match was played on his terms. With Oli, I felt each rally was a new journey - a game of chess or indeed a lottery of who would blink first. Sometimes you do need to tough out points, but I sensed that both players simply defaulted to letting these rallies meander on without a specific objective in mind.
- Body language between the 2 is chalk and cheese.
Everyone matures at different speeds, but the other 2 big '93ers, Jiri Vesely and Dominic Thiem, are light years ahead of Oli at this point, although Kyle is already not too far behind them. Wonder what 2014 will bring?
Guessing it's been a while since we had 3 Brits, hoping James wins, in round 2 of an overseas Challenger?
Just over 2 years - when Jamie Baker reached the semis in Astana and Alex Ward, Josh Milton and Dan Cox all made R2.
There have been quite a few cases of 2 Brits in R2 at the same overseas Challenger since then and the odd case of 3 or more Brits in R2 at two or more different overseas Challengers, but no instances of 3 or more Brits in R2 at the same Challenger outside the UK ... and it won't happen here either unless James wins of course!
Anyway, it was an ugly, ugly match, but who cares - it looked like it was only going one way after the 2nd set and at many points in the 3rd, but he found a way to win, and when you've only won one Challenger main draw match before and it was in the UK 2 years ago, that's a pretty big breakthrough (mentally, surely, if nothing else)
In R2, Oli gets 4th seed Dusan Lajovic (SRB) WR 144 (CH 114 in Jun after winning his 2nd Challenger title in Caltanissetta)

Oli: "Very very tough physical match. Struggled with my serve in pretty windy conditions, but so happy i managed to grind it out! #redemption Got some juicy net chords on bps in the 3rd, absolute karma for him not admitting to touching the net on an earlier big point!"
