RE: Week 35 - Great Britain F17 ($10,000) - Wrexham (Hard)

Adam's win against Tom (1125 places above him) is a career best ranking scalp by some distance - his previous best according to Helen's table was beating Scott Griekspoor, then WR 1194, in Cardiff in 2010.

George has taken a set off Dan C. Probably won't change the outcome in the long run but George has certainly had some tough draws . . .

Quite a few players here fighting to break into the top 25 table when the points get added as Slabba and Burn points are likely to drop then beyond the top 25.

Wins for:

Broady
Jones
Orton
Thorton Brown
Carpenter
Ireland
Burton
Bloomfield
Boe-Wiegaard
Cox
Glancy

Sam Hutt and JWH are on the verge of winning and Alex Jhun is 4-1 in the first set.

Sam Hutt has just completed his win but JWH's match is far from over. Yes, he dished out a first set bagel, but is currently 4-3* down on serve in the 2nd.

OK. So now JWH's match is over. From 4-4* he broke to lead and then served out for a 6-0 6-4 win.

have faith, man, have faith . . .  Josh goes AWOL sometimes . .. but wins 6-4 in the second.

Alex Jhun has taken the first set. Mark Whitehouse starting well against the higher ranked guy from India (is Mark the captain of tennis for Imperial College ? I saw their site and it seemed to me it was probably the same guy . ..  but I could be 100% wrong !)

Almost certainly going to be Liam and Josh WH, I'd have though paulisi, going up into the top 25.

Jack's got a shot but he's got a point coming off (and is bottom of the three at the moment).

None of the others is close enough to make it possible.

5 still in the running for last 3 spots - Burton, Bloomers, Broady, JWH and Carpenter. Really down to how well they do this week. I think Fitzy is safe for now.

Okay guys I promised you a report on some of the matches.

Broady v Butler was an extremely enjoyable match and by the standards of a 10K futures first round it was great quality. Butler has a pretty similar game to Broady, a good lefty forehand and a solid backhand but what really impressed me was his defence. Broady was hitting his big forehand pretty sweetly but Butler absorbed that power far better than many more experienced players have done this summer. All in all I would say that Broady was just about the better player but that Butler played well enough, and fought really hard over 2 hours and 30 minutes, that he really deserved to take the match to a decider. The only thing that cost him was not playing his break points well enough in the second set where he was guilty of being a bit passive, especially on the second of his two set points. Broady played well enough to indicate that he can go deep this week while Butler showed enough to indicate that he might just be able to make a career out of tennis. He should take a lot from this match. The only sour note of the match was the officiating which was woeful in the first set. Broady's first break should never have happened. Butler had a game point and Broady hit a stroke that was at least a foot long and the umpire some how missed it. He made a couple of other poor calls either side of it and then about 10 minutes letter Broady hit a stroke that was called out but which Butler sportingly acknowledged was in and agreed to play a let but after which both players politely (and I mean politely) requested a change of umpire. The supervisor obviously refused their requested but he added a second line judge to the court and watched the next few games himself. Amusingly the extra line judge was appointed to the service line and an exceptionally wayward Broady serve hit his chair.

Jathan Malik's defeat was largely down to illness. He was feeling under the weather but was the better player for the first set. Unfortunately things caught up with him a *2-3 in the second and he really started to struggle physically. Two extremely long points left him clearly distressed to the point where the umpire asked if needed the trainer. He declined the offer but lost the set and quickly found himself a double break down in the third. He did however show huge resilience in battling all the way to the bloody end even though he was far from 100%. At 1-4* he went through a marathon game but couldn't quite get the break back. The next game he slipped to 0-30 and at that point most players would have capitulated but he fought back and held serve, got the first break back and then held again. Sadly his opponent finally saw things out but Jathan deserves a lot of credit for his fighting spirit which coupled with his obvious talent should see him make a decent futures player as the very least.

I wouldn't really read too much into Bloomers easy win. Hudson has had a shoulder problem for the past few weeks and clearly wasn't comfortable. I do however consider retiring at 0-6, 1-5* to be pretty poor. Unless you are really hurt there is no reason not to let your opponent serve it out.

Ireland v Oakley was not a competitive match in any sense of the word. As many people will know Keelan as spent a year out with a quite horrible back problem and his game is nowhere near match sharpness. Understandably he is also not back into peak physical condition, although he was probably never there in the first place. Once Ireland got a decent lead in the first set he played with the confident swagger of a man who knew that he wasn't going to lose the match and could afford to enjoy himself on court.

I didn't see much of Carpenter v Clarke but from what I heard the fact that Clarke led 6-3, 3-0* was more down to Carpenter playing atrociously at the start of the match as opposed to what Clarke did. After the third game of the second set Jack flung his racket across the court so far that it nearly caused a let on the adjacent court. He got his second code violation for that, and thus was docked a point but I did seem to help him and he upped his level just enough to turn things around.

I also didn't see any of the Farquhrason v Thornton-Brown match but I was told that Tom was simply terrible. That being said, well done to Adam, you can only beat the opponent in front of you and he was clearly chuffed to bits with his win.

Hutt v Itzstein contained breaks of serve left right and centre. I didn't see much of it but despite winning Hutt was pretty disgusted with his level of play for much of the match.

Okay, the Anguelov default. I hardly saw any of this match as I was watching others but multiple times during the match Anguelov could be heard loudly berating the umpire and line judge. Someone told me that he was complaining about ever close decision that didn't go his way. Anyway, Anguelov was serving at 5-5 in the third and had complained about one decision during the game. He got to deuce and the line judge called foot fault on his first serve. He went ballistic and pretty much accused the linesman of cheating. A couple more points go by and after another call went against him and he literally stated screaming for at least 20 seconds. James Ireland, who was playing on a nearby court told him to shut up because other people were trying to play tennis. The two then exchanged some heated words culminating in Ireland calling Anguelov a "f*cking idiot". Play resumed and Jones broke to lead *6-5. Anguelov then approached the line judge and bellowed at him "You are a F*cking disgrace". The line judge immediately ran off to get the supervisor who on arriving at court spoke to the umpire and Jones was given the win by default.

Yep, you're quit right - I'd forgotten about Bloomers (Burton is in the top 25 already so I hadn't counted him as one of those potentially 'going up' although, of course, he;s in the battle to stay there).

Think Richard has 2 points coming off too so it's certainly going to be close.

RJA, thanks for the report.

Completely out of order. So pleased he got defaulted. What is his problem ????

No idea, never saw him play before. Incidentally James Ireland didn't even get a code violation for calling Anguelov a "f*cking idiot" even though a good 30 people must have heard it. He just got a friendly "Please mid your language James" which probably goes to show just how bad Anguelov was behaving.

I will write a bit about some other matches when I get time
