RE: Week 35 - Turkey F34 ($10,000) - Antalya-Belconti (Hard)

Rich G is 4-2* up in the 1st set.

It is not all plain sailing though. Rich is 1/1 on BPs where as Mager is 0/8 !!

R2 : Richard GABB (4) beat Gianluca MAGER (ITA) (Q) WR 1252 6-2 6-0

9 games in a row. 5/5 BPs converted. 8/8 BPs against saved. Wow!

Italian opponent with a ranking of ~1200 clearly no "rabbit" player, so this is impressive. A year ago, a few of us were suggesting that Richard had a very pleasant looking game, very steady, but with no real venom......and was never a player who could destroy an opponent.

Well today (and second and third sets yesterday), he's very much destroyed the opposition. Well done him! smile

Augurs well.

Well, not sure how to rank the opponent - he's only got 4 points and I never think that anything under 10 really counts (wildcards, fluke, the odd good game, whatever, can give anyone a few points) - BUT he is very young (18) and just starting the tour so actually he could be better than his ranking suggests (there you go - I can argue it either way).

However, what is certainly true is that Richard won it in style and that's great. (He's also got a few points coming off over the next few weeks and could do with a few here).

Vovk hit a career high 414 just over a year ago but had a dire last few months of 2012. He didn't play in February, March or April, but seems to back in better form now, unfortunately, having reached 3 Futures semis (winning 1 of them) since the start of May.

Well, you've got to be in it to win it . ..

Well done to Richard - a semi-final is very nice (and in the semis in the doubles). Nice week . . .

Oooooerr - forgot about that Bob ! wink

And now he is 5-2* up.

He seems to hit "hot streaks" at the moment where he suddenly wins several consecutive games.

May be a reason today........his opponent retired at 5-2 down.

Into the semis then for Richard and only two matches away from the Top 500. Now why would I be interested in that ?  wink

Likely to be a difficult semi though. Probable opponent will be Marcel Ilhan, top seed and WC with a ranking of 180 (CH 87 in 2011)

Sounds like a bit of a ringer to me.

Just what I was thinking. Probably spending a week or 2 with his family at one of the beach resorts in Antalya anyway.....last minute WC.
