Week 34 - Other results and round-up

With British players at the UK nationals, the G1 in the US, the G2 in Hungary and the G4 in Mauritius all having their own threads, there is also an impressively large amount of other GB representation dotted around the globe this week (the results aren't amazingly impressive, unfortunately, but the geographical coverage is !):

Vila do Conde Cup, Portugal, G4 -

Joel Cannell (2) has made the quarter finals where he plays Zeljko Milovic, the Serbian sixth seed, later today. (Christopher Reynolds (1) lost in the third round).

Rebecca Smaller (5) is also in the quarters, playing Cristina Bucsa (MDA)

Maaseik Junior Open, Belgium, G4 -

No luck here, Sacha Modica losing in the first round and India Sanders winning one match before being knocked out. Both made the QF in their respective doubles.

Junior International, St Vincent and the Grenadines, G5 -

A disappointing show in the singles - both Mia Smith (4) and Megan Rogers lost their first round matches. In the boys, Stefan Cooper made the QF but, as number 2 seed, was expected to do better (Troy Dixon and Alex Hagon also played).

Cooper is in the SF in the doubles, playing with Myles Schalet (USA) and Mia is in the final of the doubles, playing withe Briana Stampfli (TRI), (although with one bye and one w/o, they've only won one match).

AS Open - Macedonia, G5 -

Shamael Chaudhry (7) lost in R3 to the 12th seed. Giles Hussey lost in R2 to the fifth seed. Shamael still going in the doubles.

NB just noticed what an unusual and gorgeous flag the Macedonians have !

Juniors Open - Venezuela, G5 -

Alice McGinty won her first round match of both singles and doubles but unfortunately no more.

As an update (and as it's a quiet day) :

Vila do Conde Cup, Portugal, G4 -

Joel made the semis of the singles very comfortably:

QF : Joel CANNELL (GBR) [2] defeated Zeljko MILOVIC (SRB) [6] 7-6(3) 6-1
SF : Joel CANNELL (GBR) [2] v Oleg PRIHODKO (UKR) [4]

He's also made the SF of the doubles, playing with the Australian, Gonzalo MORELL RASCHIATORE.
Chris REYNOLDS is also in the SF of the doubles (other half), playing with Alan GADJIEV (UZB)

Rebecca lost her QF in three sets:

Cristina BUCSA (MDA) def. Rebecca SMALLER (GBR) [5] 4-6 6-4 6-2

but is also through to the SF of the doubles.

The tournament in St.Vincent has concluded with 1 title - Stefan's third in a row and a near miss for Mia. Stefan's quarter-final in singles equals his best ever in an ITF - very much a doubles specialist. Meanwhile in Macedonia Shamael Chaudhry's doubles campaign ended at the semifinal stage.

Junior International, St Vincent and the Grenadines, G5

Boys Doubles F

(3) Cooper/Schalet (GBR/USA) d. Abraham/Abraham (TRI) 6-3 6-3

Girls Doubles F

Mckenzie/Peus (USA) d. (2) Smith/Stampfli (GBR/TRI) 6-2 4-6 [11-9]

And to finish off the week, two more doubles champions.

Firstly, Joel lost his singles semi in Portugal:

Vila do Conde Cup, Portugal, G4 -

SF : Oleg PRIHODKO (UKR) [4] won 6-2 7-5 v JOEL CANNELL (GBR) [2]

But in doubles, we were guaranteed a winner, with Chris Reynolds being the successful player:

Final : Alan GADJIEV (UZB) / Christopher REYNOLDS (GBR) [2] won 7-5 6-7(3) [10-6] v JOEL CANNELL (GBR) / Gonzalo MORELL RASCHIATORE (AUS) [5]

In the girls, after Rebecca Smaller lost in three sets in the singles to the easy winner of the overall tournament (Cristina Bucsa), she took the doubles title:

Final : Vera ALESHCHEVA (RUS) / Rebecca SMALLER (GBR) [1] won 7-5 6-2 v Joana BRITES (POR) / Katarzyna PYKA (POL)
