She is 1-1 with Savchuk, both long ago - Elena won in straight sets in 2005, Olga in 3 in 2007, both on hard. They played doubles together at Wimbledon 2010.
Olga is looking to play her first slam singles main draw since 2010, when she beat Katie O'Brien in the FQR here.

Very sad - she will drop to around 140. Having said that, it'll be close to where she was post-Wimbledon, so she won't have slipped back over the North American hard court swing as a whole.

Real pity for Jo, but Paul, I certainly don't see it as that poor a result. It certainly didn't look a straightforward match and both TennisAbstract and the bookies gave Rogowska a winning % chance of between 30 and 40%.
At least as Steven points out Jo's two recent tournament triumphs in many ways got her defense in first so that she roughly goes back to where she was in the rankings post Wimbledon.
Even without that I would be surprised and actually doubt that she was feeling any significant extra pressure from defending the 160 points from last year. There us enough to worry about simply trying to win these matches
A disappointment sure, but on the face of it ( not having seen the match ) I don't see it as being particularly poor.
Definitely disappointing for Jo but isn't this one of the 'delights' of tennis ?
There's Jo, having had an excellent couple of weeks, on form etc.etc.etc. - and she loses in the first round to a solid but not exceptional player.
There's Bally, having hardly played a match in the last two months - and she puts out the player ranked over 100 places higher and seeded 23.
If everything went according to form or to ranking, it'd be a very boring sport !
Be interesting o see where Tara goes next. I can see her doing damage on the European indoors and there will be big challengers to compete in. Or maybe she'll give the lower grade WTA events in the Far East a go?
A hard court loss to Castano is a bit poo and not really one to try and sugarcoat, but in this situation I wouldn't be surprised if it was ultimately came down to Castano being more experienced. When Tara went 40-15 up after saving match points I thought "here we go!" But credit to the Columbian for recovering - although whether that was her or down to Tara missing we will probably never know.
I would say though that she's lost a few very tight three setters in big/high pressure events over the summer, hopefully she can find a way to make them go her way
