All the Nationals take place this week at Nottingham or Bournemouth (under 12). Lana Rush and Freya Christie contested the under 16 final last year, and they are the top seeds in a weak under 18 field. Gabi Taylor (2012 under 14 champion) and Maia Lumsden are the top seeds in the under 16s, Anastasia Mikheeva and Ellie-Rose Griffiths in the under 14s. Auray semifinalist Lauren Armstrong is seeded 4 in the under 12s. Draws:
No-one fits criteria 1-3 (WTA ranking or top ITF), but Lana and Freya come under category 4 (ranked inside 250 ITF, so are seeded 1 & 2, while Abigail Amos is the highest ranked of the others, using British Tennis rankings, so is seeded 3. Beth doesn't have a WTA or ITF ranking currently, and hasn't played a junior rating tournament since winning the Nationals last year. That gives her enough points for a minor seeding only.
There don't appear to be any major upsets on day 1
It isn't easy to find a good week for the Nationals in the summer holidays, because of the European Summer Cups / World Junior Tennis tournaments (exacerbated this year by moving the G1 US Hard Court Tournament to this week), so I'm not sure what the best solution is - one week earlier might be slightly better, but it would clash with the second week of Portugal G4s and I doubt that it would net significantly more top players, who have other priorities, without major incentives in terms of future wildcards
In today's action 3rd seed Abigail Amos lost in the under 18s (Beth Askew/Alannah Griffin are in her section, and the winner of their 3rd round match will fancy their chances to come through the section)
The under 12s and under 16s have reached the semis. The former has the top 4 seeds through - 3 who have played in the GBR under 12 team this year plus top seed Kira Reuter, who is the year above, but allowed to play because her birthday is late in the year. The under 16s also has the top 4 seeds, as expected - none having been troubled so far.
One big shock in the under 18s as Emily Smith ended the long unbeaten run of Freya Christie with a 7-6(4) 6-0 scoreline

Cheers David - there must be a better solution as Beth and Emily are incorrectly seeded. Beth has one win on the ITF tour, but not enough to secure a ranking yet.

We have the expected semi in the top half of the under 18s - neither player having dropped a set, with Beth particularly untroubled. The under 14s are also at the semifinal stage with only Ellie-Rose Griffiths having difficulties so far, just surviving a challenge from Livvy Tomkins today.

U14 SF

No system can reliably produce a seeding order which reflects the standard of all players, because of different tournament schedules, luck of the draw regarding obtaining first ATP/WTA ranking points, someone not playing for most of the year, etc. However just as the Tennis Europe seeding system for under 16 events is skewed towards those who play TE16 events, presumably to encourage more players to choose these, so the LTA's seeding system is generous towards those who just play internal events. Despite this Beth and Emily have battled their way to the final
U18 SF
(17) Beth Askew d. (1) Lana Rush 6-3 4-6 6-2 (18) Emily Smith d. (6) Grace Dixon 6-2 7-6(1)
A really tight under 18 final edged by Beth, so winning for the second time. Emily gained consolation winning the doubles with Lana, inflicting a rare defeat on Freya/Alannah in the final
