RE: Week 34 - Canada F6 ($15,000) - Winnipeg (Hard)

But in the end, yet another break and Cam is *4-2 up.

Ahead by a "hold" in this set of 5 service breaks so far.

Out of nowhere, both suddenly hold serve.

If Cam could do so again, the match is his !

A brilliant result . . .

I thought Luke's was a terrific result but I think this one actually tops that.

Great day for the Brit boys in Winnipeg.

There's a pic of the handshake at the end of Luke's match at http://pic.twitter.com/RDsHdCX9Wn - thankfully he only dressed like a lemon instead of playing like one wink

Interestingly, someone on one of the Canadian sports channels has tried to put Schnur's loss in context the way I often try to do when there's more to a GB loss than meets the eye ...

@TVAlexsports: "B. Schnur est éliminé @winnipegfutures par L. BAMBRIDGE qui a pris un set à S. STAKHOVSKY(Eastbourne), celui qui a battu Federer @Wimbledon"

It doesn't seem worth listing the R2 pairings the usual way until we find out who Luke will play next but Cam gets 4th seed Vijayant Malik WR 451, whose career high of 420 last Oct came soon after he picked up his first (and only) Futures singles title, Vietnam F5. He has accumulated most of his points at home in India.

Nice to see Cam win, I suspect he has been reinvigorated by his trip back home. Hopefully he can perform consistently now, because he has the game to get close to the top 200 level at some stage and maybe beyond.

With Rolling Stone connections and having 'nearly beaten Roger Federer', Luke is obviously a superstar in the making !!!!!

NB I saw that Malik, Norrie's next opponent, had a dead tricky time beating some WC Canadian lad with no ITF track record. Is it possible that Malik is a bit over-ranked ?

Yes - he won his only Futures singles title so far in Vietnam and mainly plays at home in India. Not necessarily easy points but the fields tend to be weaker and unlike Brits going over there, that wouldn't be offset by not being used to the conditions (heat, humidity, etc) in his case. Before the tournament started, I'd have said Zverev was a clear favourite to reach the QFs from that section, so having beaten him, hopefully Cam has a good chance against Malik.

The winners of the two R2 matches above will play each other in the semis. I would say Chvojka is the clear favourite to emerge from this quarter, but it would be great if one of the Brits could stop him!

The Canadian took a set off James Ward in Granby last month and hit a career high 204 a year ago, soon after reaching the Lexington Challenger Final, though he was helped a bit in doing that by Boggo having to withdraw from their semi. His results have been very patchy this year and while the win/loss ratio is held down by the fact that he usually plays Challengers and ATP qualifying rather than Futures, there's certainly a chance of an upset if if he has a bad day and Luke has a good day.

I'm not entirely sure what they are alluding to here, but it made me smile anyway ...
