RE: Week 34 - WTA Premier ($690,000) - New Haven, CT, USA - Hard

Serving for the set for a 2nd time, she starts the game much better and gets 3 set points ... only for Garcia to win 5 points in a row

Bally breaks, goes up 40-0 and loses the next 5 points.

Tiebreak.

*sigh*

Very hard to stomach that one. 5 set points blown.

But for a first match in weeks to put in that performance? Wow. So important she isn't down on herself. Next week is so much more important.

Yes, some rustiness probably contributed to the blown match points, but she must have played pretty well and fought hard - not a bad way to get back into the swing of things ready for USO qualifying next week.

For completeness it was 75 76 (7)

Garcia is also very streaky. Wouldn't be surprised if she hit 5 screamers on that 12th game.

A half decent draw and Bally has a real shot at coming through qualies next week.

In the Times today, OEM says the reason given for Hev's retirement was a hip injury but she "is believed still to be suffering the effects of a bout of glandular fever" and is a serious doubt for the US Open. (if no big surprise)

Not great news about Hev, I assume though that she'll still line up next week and then maybe take time off afterwards.

Coach Fitzy's protege is a set up on Julia Goerges

Coach earned his stripes tonight. After losing the 2nd set 6-2, a quick pep talk from Coach Fitzy and Sloane comes out firing to win the 3rd 6-1.

Good job Fitzy and well played to Sloane as well.

Not to take anything away from Coach Fitzy, but Nainkin was back doing the oncourt coaching last night, as I was actually watching part of that match. No TV shots of Fitzy in the crowd either.

In other news Annie K explained why Hev withdrew from her qualies match:

' Just when Hev was about to serve she felt something in her groin ( no mention of hip ) and as she was still carrying the elbow problem that she picked up in Cinci decided to withdraw '. Nothing mentioned about her GF but worrying that the elbow problem which has kept cropping up over the last few years has reemerged again.
