Converted! GSM Ward 6-3, 6-1. 6 games in a row to win the second set and a very convincing scoreline following a couple of slightly underwhelming results since winning Lexington. Well done James Ward!
Worth noting that this is his first win in US Open qualifying going 0-3 in his previous 3 attempts and only winning a single set in the process. Good to break that run!
Bachinger through (also) at a canter, so next round will be tough, but no reason James can't win.
The winner looks like playing Dev Varman (already through) or Ginepri (a set up), most probably the Indian. He's known to be a die hard "pusher" on tour, perhaps even more so than Odesnik, so it's all about controlled aggression for his opponents to beat him. If James can get through QR2, he needs to be more controlled than against Odesnik recently, but without being passive. A tricky balance, for sure......first things first, however.
Good luck for QR2, and let's hope this motivates Mr Evans!
Interesting QR1 match between two Germans - Pütz won the 1st set only for Reister to win the 2nd and then hand out a golden set bagel (i.e. 6 love games) in the 3rd!
