Yes it has, under Leon the lads are really starting to catch fire, which is a very positive trend.
Yes. Leon Smith has done nothing but impress since he got the men's tennis and DC roles. Even that rather awkward situation re selecting Jamie Baker for the Russia DC match then calling up a non-pick instead at the last moment, whilst baffling at the time, now seems like a ruthlessly logical and pragmatic decision, based on what he saw during pre-match training. Not nice to have to do, but he did the right thing. He never looks flustered, he never appears to be negative, he commands respect from the players (who themselves are all very different), and he appears to offer constructive advice and practical support, and he's creating a team spirit..............
Managed a quick check on the results before I headed out for the day.
Well done to James and Dan!
How great to have British wins to be happy about. Let's hope they can keep the momentum going and get through into the main draw - that would be brilliant!
Everything I've seen first hand (not much but a bit) and heard/read about him (quite a lot) has been very impressive, way more so (IMHO) than John Lloyd AND way more so than Martin Weston.
The ironic thing with Leon Smith was that he only gut the job(s) because he was the "Murray candidate". No one else with his CV would have been catapulted into such senior positions that quickly but he has certainly shown that he was the right man.
FQR: James Ward WR 175 lost to (q6) Somdev Devvarman (IND) WR 113 (CH 62 in 2011) by 6-3 3-6 6-4 FQR: Dan Evans WR 179 beat Adrián Menéndez-Maceiras ESP WR 184 (CH 169 in 2012) by 6-7(3) 6-4 6-2
This is the first time Evo has qualified for a slam (having only won two matches in slam qualies in his career before) and he is the first British man to qualify at the US Open for 7 years. Only 4 have managed it since two Brits qualified in 2000:
Dan's win today (assuming he at least turns up for R1!) should take him to around his career high, with a better than even chance that he will take it out by a place or two.
