RE: Week 32 - Challenger ($100,000) - Aptos, CA, USA (Hard)

If Ward qualifies and then say advances past R1, does he get the 5 points for qualifying regardless or it this only if he's knocked out in R1?

I believe he keeps the 5 points regardless - even if he wins the tournament !!

I bet Evgeny Donskoy is just chuffed to be in the opposite half of the draw to Mr Evans! wink

From what Steven was saying is Wardy in regardless of whether he wins or loses this match then?

Yes. And perhaps Wardy has been reading Steven's posts as he he loses the 2nd set 6-1

Yes, James is in as a LL even if he loses this match.

However he won't get the 5 qualifying points if he loses.

Yes he is but if he wants the 5 points for qualifying he needs to win this match.

Personally I think it is a total joke that someone can go into final round qualifying knowing that they are assured of a lucky loser spot if they don't win the match. The system used for the futures tour is much better.

James is now *3-1 down in the 3rd set. I won't call it the decider because as RJA says, James' fate has already been decided.

I deliberately didn't tag him on that one, if I remember right. LOL

However:

a) he'll have been completely aware of this without anyone needing to tell him

b) he might need those 5 points to stay ahead of Evo sometime soon

c) why bother to win a 12-game 1st set if you're not going for the qualifying points?

Of course, there is an argument that if it gets really tough (opponent playing well, etc), the player who already knows they are in the main draw might not fight quite as hard in a long FQR match as they otherwise would ... and he's now 1-3* down in the 3rd, so the match is slipping away fast.

As I am sure you realized Steven, my comment was very much tongue in cheek.

I know but as RJA says, there is an issue here that is quite difficult to resolve fairly (the way they do it in Futures is far from perfect too)
