Sometimes our guys do seem to mature and suddenly 'kick on' in their early to mid-twenties after spending a few years in the backwaters. Mark Petchey and Martin Lee are 2 guys who spring to my mind who spent years on the futures/challengers before suddenly making the leap up into the top 100, though not for that long in Lee's case.
I don't think it's just our guys either.
The youngsters who sail up the rankings in a blaze of glory obviously get a lot of attention but I can think of tons of top 100 French players, for instance, who have come on a lot more slowly, sometimes with stops and starts, sometimes just doggedly inching up.
I agree with others that Dan hasn't wasted the past years, although there are probably things he could have done differently. And just because he's doing it now, doesn't mean that he was capable of doing it three years ago. Some kids go to US college to get the springboard from which to kick off successful careers. Maybe Dan just did the 'university of life' . . .
I think the last two weeks have been much more encouraging from Dan than Nottingham, Queen's or even the DC wins, simply because he's had to do it away from home and had to win so many back-to-back matches. Winning tonight (which will be very difficult, I'm sure) would cap it off nicely!
