Looking further ahead at a potential fight for the British No2 position.
James defends 22 points during the US Open fortnight while Dan defends just 6. However Dan then defends 18 points in each of the two weeks after the US Open and with the Davis Cup tie he probably won't be able to do that. After that he defend just 11 points in late October and November. James of course has noting to defend post US Open as he was injured last year.
Yes, on the face of it it ooks like Dan has more chance this year of getting to number 2 in the shorter term with James having nothing to defend late on. Of course Dan could ( hopefully ) have a great end to the year.
I said somewhere on this thread that a QF win would be enough to take Dan to GB no. 2. I'm not sure how I managed to calculate that, because looking at it this morning, I calculate that he'd actually still be 10 points behind - sorry about that! (hard to believe nobody corrected it on Twitter or here, so perhaps I've gone mad today instead of yesterday ... hmm)
You still haven't got it quite right. James will be on 278 points next Monday. If Dan reaches the SF he will be on 270 points next Monday, so 8 points behind James. If he reaches the final he will be 17 points ahead of James.
However Dan will drop 26 points the following week (27 coming off from his Cumberland title, offset by 1 point from a current non-countable) so he will need to win the tournament if he is to stay above James for more than a week.
Yes, I meant 10 points behind where I must have calculated he'd be, sorry! Not having a good 24 hours LOL

Was always going to be the case. Even if he loses tonight there it would have been a huge struggle for him to get to Cincinnati in time for qualifying.
We'll not be seeing Pospisil on the challenger circuit again any time soon. Davydenko pulled out of their QF after going 3-0 down. 360 ranking points and $135,000. Not bad! He'll be top 40 and should have an SE for Cincinnati.
Anyone think Dan is starting to play himself into the 2nd singles spot for the Davis Cup tie, if indeed Andy does play.
Leon could certainly have a tough call to make. I am guessing that he will be in New York for US Open qualifying so who out of James and Dan plays the best there might well get the nod.
So glad I stayed up tonight - I've never seen him play as well as that Nice-looking SF now (famous last words!) ... and GB no. 2 really will be at stake this time.
QF: (SE) Dan Evans WR 194 beat (1) Guido Pella (ARG) WR 96 (CH 75 in Jun) 5 & 1
SF: (SE) Dan Evans WR 194 v (Q) Farrukh Dustov (UZB) WR 213 (CH 173 in 2007)

Looks like it will be an even later start for Dan than we had expected. The first two quarter finals both went to 3 sets (wins for Dustov and Klahn) so we are probably looking at another 2 hours, maybe longer, before Dan gets on court.
