RE: Week 31 - WTA Premier $800K - Carlsbad, CA, USA - Hard

Laura is first on vs Kvitova at 11 AM local time which is friendly for us UK fans - should be at 7 GB time.

Shame there is no stream though.

Oh dear ......Laura's 1st service game 1st point DF!!

Not looking good Laura's already served 3 DF's to one ace in her very 1st service game 0-2*

confuse

american sports term - perform well in the most important moments in a match - win the points that make most difference like BP or save them etc

though i guess susie dent would frown at it

Ah, thank you, TT .  Never, ever, come across the term before, so I assumed it was a bad typo (not uncommon on here).  Like most things American, particularly that gibberish they like to call "English", I find it totally illogical, not to mention incomprehensible, now that its meaning's been explained.  Regard me as this board's Susie Dent. wink  At least I know who she is.

Also another interview with Tennis Reporters ( one of the top tweeters on twitter ) reliving the tension she felt during Andy's final with Novak.

The groundpass guy I've come across before for his coverage of the WTA tournament in Dallas.

L16 : RAYMOND, Lisa USA/ROBSON, Laura GBR lost to SPEARS, Abigail USA/KOPS-JONES, Raquel USA [3] 4-6 3-6

In very, very simple terms and using only live scores and stats (which should never be used to judge a match, but I will anyway!)

This match was won and lost on BP's......Robmond 2/8  Spears/Jones 5/8.

5 double faults from Laura already, and 5 aces from Kvitova - serve almost certainly the difference so far.

1-6 - not great to say the least but 1-6 is a bit harsh on Laura as there were a few close games that Kvitova won. Kvitova is known for winning the first set easily and then lapsing so Laura still in this.

That was the pattern of the matches yesterday. Lose the first set win in three.
Laura , hopefully , will continue this pattern

Sounds like Laura hasn't been as bad as it looks; I've seen tons of close games, just looks like Laura hasn't been as clutch as Kvitova.

A real battle out there at the moment, a lot of tight games, but Laura now facing Petra's serve at 2-5*.
It can be a little hard for us sometimes to think rationally about Laura, she's had such fantastic results in the last year or so that some of us (certainly myself included) find it hard to keep our expectations in check. After all, Laura is 32 in the world, and Kvitova is a Slam winner and world number 7.
