RE: Week 31 - WTA Premier $800K - Carlsbad, CA, USA - Hard

R1: ROBSON, Laura (GBR) 31 beat MORITA, Ayumi (JPN) 51 4-6 7-5 6-2

R2: ROBSON, Laura (GBR) 31 v KVITOVA, Petra (CZE) 3 7

Laura beat Kvitova 11-9 in the 3rd when they met in the Australian Open earlier this year.

They are both left handed. Kvitova is 23 to Laura's 19. Kvitova reached a career high of 2 in Oct 2011.

Reckon she has a decent chance if she can reel in some of those DF's. Don't get nearly as much room for error against the better players. If she can defeat Kvitova then I would bet on her making the SF's.

A win is a win and nearly sealed the US open seeding, one more win will probably guarantee it.

Double faults weren't too bad if you look at the ratio, but will obviously have to step it up on Thursday when it will be televised.

Doubles tomorrow probably.

Wow! I'd pretty much given up on this one at 4-6 4-5 0-30* but that's now two out of three matches Laura has come back from the brink of defeat. These sort of wins really help for future matches when she is behind to keep believing.

Next up a repeat of the Australian Open 2nd round v Kvitova which was both one of the best matches of the season and one of the worst, depending on how you look at it.

I bet a few people at BT Sport were cheering that result too - their channel starts on Thursday and Laura v Kvitova is a match I can see them plugging (hopefully they don't play tomorrow)

Good point about BT there Tony; I actually had the opportunity to talk to a BT exec at a convention recently (they were plugging BT Sport+Infinity combo) and they were pretty open about their pleasure in Robson's R4 at Wimby because it had generated a ton more interest in the WTA side of their 'offerings'. Can't see them passing up the opportunity of an opening-day top-10 killing!

Laura's 1st serve percentages:-
1st set 38% in winning 55%
2nd set 58% in winning 70%
3rd set 69% in winning 77%

Morita's 1st serve percentages:-
1st set 62% in winning 80%
2nd set 50% in winning 63%
3rd set 69% in winning 43%

It was touch and go near the end of the 2nd set as Laura kept closing and it could have gone either way, but once Laura levelled at 5-5 the momentum was all in one direction.

Absolutely, I was giving this up as a lost cause, great to see Laura come through and as you say, this sort of result will be in the memory bank next time she's looking down and out. Great stuff.

I still think Laura is up and down and a little too inconsistent to go deep into a premier event like this ......yet! But it will come with time, it will come  smile.

A couple of interesting links:

Brief highlights (7 points in which Laura hits 2 drop shots and one volley) of Laura's match and a post match interview are part of this video by Marcus Tennis: http://groundspass.net/2013/07/30/2013-southern-california-open-ii/ (Laura starts a few minutes in but worth watching at all as it is unintentionally quite amusing (after another changeover...))

Laura enhances her public image by having a post match hit wth a young fan: http://www.wtatennis.com/news/article/3332754/title/robsons-kind-gesture-in-carlsbad

I'd pretty much given up towards the end of the second set, but was pleased to see her turn it round and win the second - then I fell asleep. I thought she'd got rid of the DF blues, i hope they aren't back with a vengence. Pretty tough scheduling, but she's young and if Miles has been working her hard as Andy pertained to, fit too, so it shouldn't be a problem.

What is the BT sport channel, is it free or another sky type thing?
