Bit of a disappointing result for Wardy as this was a very winnable match. Still, I think a title one week and a fairly early exit the next is better than say back to back semi-finals.
Evo third on centre court today so probably starting at 3:00PM local time (11:00PM BST). If he was to lose it then it could well be a struggle to make Aptos in time for qualifying. Would be possible if there is a late evening flight from Vancouver to San Francisco, or at a push an early morning one on Saturday. Much better to beat Rochus and get the SE.
Does winning any of these pre-US OPEN challengers afford you a wild card for the US OPEN? I seem to remember Matt Ebden getting one for Wimbledon after winning Nottingham Challenger.
I was watching Wardy on and off yesterday and he just seemed to be having a real off day, he's normally so consistent from the back of the court but was unable to get any rhythm on his groundies. Shame he'll have to qualify in Aptos now.
I could be making this up but I believe the USTA offer a wildcard based on the whole stretch of challengers, as a series. I'm not sure if that is just for American players.
Would be great to see Dan get the win tonight, seal his place next week and put some big points on the board.
Seems to be a very strange OOP for today's men's singles. There is one outstanding match from R2 between Pospisil and Klahn which was stopped early in the second set.
They are second up on Centre court to finish their match, but if Klahn wins, then he will have to go almost straight back on to play on Court 3. However, is Pospisil wins, they are going to give him the afternoon off and he will play his QF last on Centre court as an evening match.
Now I know the organisers will say that they want the "home favourite" and Nº 2 seed in Centre Court, but why can't they play the QF in the evening regardless of who wins. All seems very unfair to Klahn. I guess the Canadians never did like the Americans that much.
I guess the Canadians never did like the Americans that much.
And still don't! To this day, there is no greater insult to which you can subject a Canadian than to take him (or her) for an American! Bit like mistaking a Kiwi for an Aussie...
I'd say that to a very large extent that's a sympton of having a much bigger neighbour and being very proud of their own natuonal identity than necessarily actual dislike.
No, not necessarily. Are any of the others higher up the Aptos qualifying list still playing? There will always be a limited number of SE places and they're given in order of ranking.
