Interesting that Tiffany William (and several of the other college girls) are playing over the summer, but the likes of her teammate Jade and Natalie Beazant, Sam Vickers etc are not - is this likely to be a rules thing or just personal preference?
Sabrina has broken her 12-match (singles) losing streak, beating Hollie 0 & 4
Judging by what I saw her winning streak won't last much longer....
I'll give an overview of the day later on.
Was the match and quality of play really poor? Been looking at the results when you see Eden Siva winning 2 and 3 after getting baggelled by Lisa last one it makes one wonder about the standards !
Interesting day - I stayed a lot longer than I meant to and in general I was quite impressed with the standard generally(bar a couple of exceptions). Not a lot of difference in the quality of play other than the mental strength and ability to restrict the unforced errors. I watched bits and pieces of most match.
Mel had an easy win despite a difficult previous evening, which meant she got hardly any sleep - Farah Abdelaziz, who I believe is at Durham, is not good enough for this level.
The Swiss sisters(twins?) were really poor and Bridget won very easily although I didn't see much of Eden's match, but it seemed comfortable enough. From some of the girl's comments, i'm not sure Eden is good enough at this level.
Match of the day was definitely Tiffany William v the Belarussian girl. Tiffany is out in the US at college and looks a terrific prospect. A very powerful hitter and good mover around the court and a good serve when she could get it in. I can see her easily get into the top 500-600 when she has a full season. Unfortunately she came up against a very good opponent this week and there wasn't much between them.
Beth Askew v Kathryn Hughes was a poor match littered by errors. Kathryn trains at Wrexham, but looked very nervy and Beth probably won by making fewer errors.
Lauren McMinn looked a nice player, but the French girl was just a little more classy and played the bigger points better.
Didn't see any of the Drew v Wall match
Only saw bits and pieces of Lucy v Laura, but it was hard to tell who was ranked. Laura played some lovely shots and has a decent forehand and a very good single handed backhand, but I think experience told.
Didn't see any of the Sian Payne match
Pippa v Anna - saw the first three games before I went and they were all very close and long games. Pippa looks like she has a solid game and could be a reasonable prospect.(Inverdale would have said this was the game of the "lookers")
Now for the poorest game of the day - Sabrina v Hollie. I'm not joking, but after a couple of games I couldn't take much more and then I tried watched a couple more games later on.
Sabrina - young lady, dual nationality(English is not her first language) has a nice sliced backhand, but that's about the only positives I can add. her service is appalling. So many big DF's and missed first serves and her forehand was quite weak and not very accurate.
Hollie - has a very limited game.
The Watts twins Anneka and Sophie are both at college in the US and there Dad was very open and chatty. Sophie is by far and away the better player and is in the college side, whereas Anneka only gets to play via reserve berths. Anneka was on the far court so was difficult to see, but got outplayed by Fran. Sophie is the prospect if she can get her serve and service return going(which see did at Woking). Unfortunately she came up against the Spaniard who was the best player on view and hardly made a mistake all match. I believe the Spanish girl is at Durham next year. Sophie and Anneka are playing county week for the next couple of days. Sophie has a wildcard for Nottingham and is thinking about entering a 10K in Belgium, but we are unlikely to see much of them on tour once they go back to the US.
Nicole Peterson after a slow start(3-0 down) won very easily and hits the ball very powerfully.
Georgia Craven had a nice all round game, but the Japanese girl moved her round the court and had too much court guile for her. Georgia has the potential the get into the ITF rankings if that is her ambition.
Jess v Alicia was on the far away court and I don't think the standard was that high. There were a lot of loud self criticism on the court especially from Alicia.
Tara Moore decided to come up for a few days and meet up with her tennis mates before she disappears off to North America for a couple of months. She going out to Vancouver on Thursday so probably wouldn't have played Wrexham anyway, but for an administration error which prevented her from playing.
As for the final qualifiers:
FQR: SOUTH, Melanie (GBR) 1 601 v FOLLAND, Brigit (GBR) UNR - provided Mel gets a decent sleep, she should beat her close friend fairly comforatbly
FQR: ASKEW, Sarah Beth (GBR) WC UNR v PIRAZHENKA, Sviatlana (BLR) 2 612 - expect the Belarussian to win with just a couple of games dropped
FQR: DREW, Jazzamay (GBR) UNR v DODIN, Oceane (FRA) 3 615 - didn't see Jazz play, but Dodin should be too classy
FQR: BROWN, Lucy (GBR) 4 697 v VAN DE GRAAF, Gabriela (NED) 12 1131 -judging by Lucy's performance this may be a bit of a struggle to get through
FQR: BAMBURAC, Sabrina (GBR) 9 1061 v HORN, Pippa (GBR) UNR - If Sabrina plays similar to today, then Pippa should win in straight sets
FQR: PETERSON, Nicole (GBR) 10 1082 v BELZUNCE-CROMPIN, Ana (ESP) 6 848 - tough draw for Nicole against the best player in the qualis
FQR: STEPHENSON, Francesca (GBR) 7 947 v SILVA, Eden (GBR) 13 1173 - easy win for Fran
FQR: REN, Jessica (GBR) 11 1129 v WATANABE, Hirono (JPN) 8 1002 - easy win for the Japanese girl
I can only see 3 GB girls getting through and they are all GB ties.
